Can anyone confirm that Bob's current touring drummer, Winston Watson, is the same Winston Watson who played with Giant Sand in their early days? Bob's Winston is from Tucson, Giant Sand's home base.
(Since there are so many links between Bob and Giant Sand's Howe Gelb in terms of songwriting and performance improvisation, as well as Giant Sand's Dylan covers, this is interesting to conjecture that there is a real physical link between them.)
Stephen M. H. Braitman/Amorous Writing & Editing
picked this up on a different newsgoup:
The band the Gin Blossoms is on a break right now and their two guitar
players have formed a side band and one of the members is Winston Watson
who played for Bob Dylan for quite a while.
This little side project is called The Low Watts and they will be
performing live for the first time April 4th in Flagstaff, AZ. They are
also planning to record an album as well.
Just thought I would pass the tidbit of information on to you here. from
what I understand the band is supposed to sound a little like Rolling
Stones style...should be interesting hearing Jesse on lead vocals again.
As posted before, Winston is teaming up with some guy of the Gin Blossoms for a possible new album. He is, however, in another new Tuscon-based band as well.
I had a chance to talk to his neighbor Howe Gelb today and here is what he had to say:
"Our daughters are best friends and we got a new band together called Ton. It's with this really cool singer called Joey. It's Winston, Joey, myself, some guy named Kelly on bass and this realy cool young kid on guitar named Jason. He's only 23 and he plays in another band with Joey. It's so great cause it#s this huge sound and Joey's got this really great vocal ability. He can do anything. I only get to make some noise on the guitar and I don't even have to play lead and I also play a wurlitzer piano. It's so much fun. It's so simple, so easy."
"It's good that Winston moved back to Tuscon. We car-pool very morning with the kids going to school. (...) We're not holding it to anything. It'll develop on it's own."
The band reportedly played some shows in Arizona already and actually recorded some tracks as well. Unfortunately, there's no plans to release anything as yet.
(For the uninitiated: Howe is a legend on his own, too :) He's singer/ guitarist with Giant Sand, Band Of Blacky Ranchette and now OP8)
