Subject: Black Cross

Writer of the Lord Buckley song Black Cross.

Joseph Simon Newman was a Cleveland poet, newspaper man, inventor, and social gadfly who was actually Paul Newman's uncle. ...

Newman's poems appeared in a column entitled "It Could Be Verse" in one of the Cleveland newspapers and were published in a book of the same title in the late 1940s.

Buckley's interpretation of "Black Cross" sticks very closely to the Newman original and represents one of the few times when His Lordship changed nary a word of a piece of text, choosing to present the piece in all its harrowing glory. A very important piece of business in the catalogues of both Dylan and Buckley.
