Santiago, Chile
April 16, 1998

Bob Dylan played here last night.
It was at the "Teatro Monumental", south of downtown, on the fringes of
civilized Stgo. Grimy. Full to capacity, 6,000 folks. Funny how this time
all the ones down front are the over 40's. I am one of these, my wife
beside me, so's Andrˇs Urrutia, longtime Dylan fanatic and friend. Second
row, middle. There's the stage, 10 feet away.

The instruments and speakers, amplifiers and microphones all appear to
have seen a lot of use. The equipment looks like it's analogue.

The lights go off and the band takes their places. Dylan's just a little
guy and he looks the same as he always has, only older. They say nothing to
the audience, and begin to play.

The music has the gritty quality that you used to hear on old 45's,
analogue. They opened and continued through a 15 song set that hardly had
any sleepy stuff and did have a good bit of real rock n' roll. 3 standing
ovations, Dylan and cronies came back twice.

Ol' Bob mumbled through his nose during several tunes making it real hard
to understand the lyrics, but since his faithful followers know all the
tunes, they mumbled through their noses as well. There were cheers from the
crowd when he played a couple of verses on the harmonica.

Many of the diehard Dylanites were fascinated by the drop of sweat that
hung at the tip of Dylans nose as he jammed through his act. His effortless
style betrayed by that one little drop.

Apart from some facial gestures, the only dialogue that Dylan had with the
audience was when he presented the band, though he limited himself to just
giving their names, except when he presented guitar player Campbell, he did
say that Campbell was from "very far away".

It was the first and only time that I've been to a Dylan show. I spent
$75.00 U.S. for each ticket. The show lasted an hour and a half. Fifty
bucks an hour to bathe in the reflected glory.

Some things you just gotta do once before you die!

Different concerts, set lists, moods, audiences. And I have to tell you, last night's concert was simply the best. Absolutely GREAT Dylan!. And I got to tell you the audience was great too. And Bob appreciated it. He gave us a couple of 'gifts' that made us a very privileged audience last night. I share your comment and feelings, and feel blessed to have been a part of such a celebration of genius and ART.
