It was a slow starter and the acoustic part was so, so, but Bob and the band were struttin their stuff during the second half. The big hype around this Moline venue was WWF coming next week. That, or hockey is about what the place is good for.(we did wonder why they were flying the Canadian flag from the ceiling?) The acoustics were terrible with sound bouncing around in boomy circles. It sounded like someone was trying to make it work, by fiddling the knobs up and down, so that the vocals, and Bob and Charlie's guitars would fade in and out from song to song. Larry's guitar was always mixed too high. The place was also only about half full at most, with what seemed a mostly local, more curious than enthused crowd. During the first couple songs Bob was hanging back and encouraging Larry to do the leads. But he couldn't resist and gradually took over, with that "now I'm going to work, check this out, look on his face." Actually what we mostly did throughout this show was laugh. I no doubt have a warped sense of humor, but that man is just sooo funny, from his jerky posing, to his yanking up his sagging pants at harp solo time, to that last haughty "formation." During TUIB he seemed to be skipping all the words of the refrain until he'd get to the word "blue." Then he'd pop his eyes open really wide and sing it really loud. Watchtower roared across the screen, Drifter was its demented highlight self, and the Joey lyrics were spit out as fast and fierce as he could manage. Shooting Star was just beautiful, no other word for it. So though not near a great show, that main body electric set alone was well worth the trip. The man still surely knows how to stoke the fire when he wants to. It'll hit you upside your head, so don't ya dare miss it.
