Really dig the groove of this song and I have looked at all the lyric sites I know and have come up empty... Anyone here think they have a handle on the lyrics to the Shot of Love outtake "Is it Worth It?" If so would ya care to share? Thanks in advance.

so here is my attempt... and this was difficult indeed as evinced in the varied versions of “Santa Fe,“ “I’m Not There “What Kind Of Friend Is This?” “I Can’t Leave Her behind” among others.

this song is killing me. funky. junky almost. did he revisit mr. smack after jesus? different mood from the tunes on the SOL album. the lyrics are cryptic and muddy. make me think this might have been a one-off improve. makes me wonder what he has written and never published. makes me think that the best stuff of the 80’s is locked away from recordings and record. for the ether dwellers and silence.

what did he play alone in the many bed rooms and motels, what was he confronting within himself and his position with god/art? a move away from evangelic and toward the defeated perhaps. inside the biblical notion of god’s will seems a difficult place dance freely, not to mention the pressure of sales. just look at the man as he is presented to us during this time. is he even presenting himself? he has the Bob Dylan mask as an out. yet another aspect of his artistic genius me thinks. he is hurtin’ and drinkin’ and blowin’ like so many of us. don’t believe genius comes and goes: no wave theory here, though waves seem to apply to what one is willing to reveal.

and the guitar work is moving. wonder who played it…

so I present the transcription of the 1980? 1981? “Shot of Love” outtake.

“Is It Worth it?”

baadadada

I hope
I don’t hear (And the ear) (Adaloear?)
And the time when
All they heal (All the here?)

I will take ya
For a ride
All pawater (pervader?) (ah cowater?) (all pervader)
All the here

Cuz the bad moon on the rise
He (Peace?) (Heat?) (Me?) shining in your eyes

Is it worth it,
What your doin’ to me?

Operator
All will tell ya
And I will
Before too long

(Toll?) (Told?) the razy (racing?)
Cadillac roadster
In (and?) the pocket
Of a’right or wrong

Patty Girl with your blue bell eyes
Shining desert so (sone?)

Is it worth it?
What your doin’ to me.

Of a take
Fifteen (fifty) dollars
And, ugh, I roll them
Central park west
He creator (laughs)
My own baby
Then she know it
Deep in our bed
But it don’t move up to know
And that ain’t the way the flower grows

Is it worth it,
What your doing to me?

The conduction (seduction?) of the will
And a nasty automobile
All them dollars (all the dollar)
Couldn’t buy
All the sorrow (sworrow?) (swolrow?)
Make you cry

Some place I fore (for?) know
I’ve died each ya don’t go

Is it worth it,
What your doin’ to me

Any suggestions/changes...

I'll have a listen tonight and report back. But when you write out lyrics for some of the songs, "I'm Not There" in particular, they lose something, I think; I like having some ambiguity in places like that. For example, what on earth is the missing line of the verse in my signature? I refuse to read any of the transcripts. Also, when written out, sometimes you realise that the sentences don't make conventional sense. It's the sound of the words that does it (especially on I'm Not There).

"and i meese on the highseen..." is what i hear before your signature. but as to the these tunes... the lyrics all seem unfinished, like he is just singing sounds to fill in the gaps between lyrical facts. a facinating glimps into his process. yea.
