To say that the track listing is interesting is an understatement.

A beautiful collection of music there if i don't say so myself.

I personally don't see at all the interest of the commercial edition of a 'nearly-TTRH compilation' except to milk the cow.
If Dylan signed a financial deal with Starbucks coffeehouse chain in exchange of his 'favourite' list and comments, up to him. I'm no longer surprised after the Cadillac agreement. The artist has to pay his bills like all of us.



Nevertheless Bob deserves the full merit and appreciation for introducing the young and old generations inside and outside the USA, through his TTRH format since May 2006, to a vaste treasury of musical pearls.
On basis of his nice catalog of samples/examples it's up to each of us to go eventually deeper into the choice and taste proposed by a 66 years old connaisseur and collector.

I think you addressed that issue very well yourself in a later paragraph, my friend.

The "interest" to me is being introduced to various artists such as Gus Viseur, and Gétatchéw Kassa, among others, artists I might not have ever known about if not for Bob Dylan. As you said, that growing "treasury of musical pearls" via TTRH or through a Starbucks compilation is worth our appreciation. And if Mr. D. happens to make a couple of bucks from his efforts, more power to him is what I say.

For those interested, our friends over at All Along the Watchtower.dk appear to have gotten their hands on a pre-release copy of the CD, and have posted what appear to be the complete liner notes.

Someone with a good record collection should post MP3s of all these...

We have morning DJ's here that prattle on about crap daily
and haven't played a good record yet, but they are celebrities

Can anyone tell me how long these CDs are usually available to buy in Starbucks? I'll be in the USA in April. Just naively wondering. I assume they're only available in the US Starbucks.

I picked up the CD yesterday, fanboy that I am driving through a snow storm to do so, and was amused to find in the credits:

Compilation produced by Tim Ziegler.

Apparently ol' Tim's complaints to Our Host back in the "Lock & Key" show impressed him. Maybe there's hope for us yet.

Dylan's liner notes could have come straight from TTRH. In fact, I'll have to go back to my own notes, but the story he tells about Junior Parker and I'm Going to Murder My Baby sounded very familiar. It also looks like XM and the TTRH team are still taking advantage of cross-promotion when they can There are blurbs both for the TTRH show and for Starbucks XM Cafe on XM Radio

You can only use the website to order a copy if you're in the US, unfortunately (I've just tried).

I love Gus Viseur, so I'm glad Bob does as well.

Also a little Theme Time joke surely in choosing Billie Holiday's "I Hear Music" for a Starbucks comp (ie Starbucks record label being "Hear Music").

The CD is now available through resellers at Amazon from prices currently ranging from $6.86 to $19.97, all with U.S. shipping at $2.98

I picked this up, and after a first listen, three songs stand out as being worth the purchase alone:

(SLICK blues record that John Lennon HAD to have heard at some point.)

I Like You - Sol Hoopii & His Novelty Quartette
(WICKED syncopated guitar by a TT regular.)

Victimas del Huracán Beulah - Flaco Jiménez With Toby Torres & José Morante
(BOOMING bass on a Tejano delight.)

The rest of the songs didn't really stick, but I'll give 'em another listen.

Any further thoughts on this? I'm torn between NOT buying it, not because I view Starbuck's as beneath me (which I don't - in fact I quite enjoy the coffee and middlebrow aesthetic), but because there seems something slightly cheesy about buying something just because Bob signed his name to it. On the other hand, if it's a window into his collection it's of innate interest to a Dylanite like me. On the whole, what's the verdict - how does it rate as a listening experience?
