According to Directive 2011/77/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 September 2011 the situation in regard to phonograms/recordings is as follows:

A recording must be released within a period of 50 years after fixation (= recording date), otherwise it falls into the public domain (in the EU). If it is released within that period (the cut off date being Dec. 31) it is protected for 70 years from the date of release.

Dec 31st offers a last glimmer of hope today, the 50th anniversary of the John Wesley Harding release.

no – anybody who has the recordings is allowed to offer than from 1/1/18 onwards. 31/12/17 is only the last day for a copyright protecting official release.
Still I doubt that Sony can really be sure that nobody has any alternate, outtake or whatsoever from the recordings session

That´s not logical to me.

If somebody will bring out the session material from JWH he didn´t care about the law cause it will be a bootleg and they don´t care about a date.

Only if they have the session material.

I think there will be no 50th anniversary edition.

well, they will care – because after 31/12/17 they can sell it legally

What I wanted to say is that the bootlegers don´t care about the law.

If the bootlegers really got the sessions why didn´t they bring them out years ago ???

And I am not sure about your comment, can they really bring it out legal ???

after the copyright has expired the recordings are public domain. Anybody can relased them legally (just like anybody is allowed to (re-) print Shakespeare, Goethe etc or to release blues songs from the 30s or ealry rock'n'roll from the 50s).

From today's front page. 3 days left in JWH copyright.

Bob Dylan released his eighth LP “John Wesley Harding” on Dec. 27, 1967

Bob Dylan released his eighth LP “John Wesley Harding” on Dec. 27, 1967. This record marked Dylan’s return to acoustic music and traditional roots, after three albums of electric rock music.

The album was well received by critics and enjoyed solid sales, reaching #2 on the US charts and topping the UK charts. The commercial performance was considered remarkable considering that Dylan had kept Columbia from releasing the album with much promotion or publicity. Less than three months after its release, John Wesley Harding was certified gold by the RIAA.

“All Along the Watchtower” became one of his most popular songs after it was recorded by Jimi Hendrix the following year.

In 2003, the album was ranked number 301 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

How long did it take for you to realize that “All Along the Watchtower” was not written by Hendrix?
Happy 50th Birthday to the LP “John Wesley Harding”!!

Not be nitpicky but all of Dylan's recordings, released or unreleased, are still protected by copyright in the United States. Also, even if a recording falls into the public domain over in Europe, the composing copyright in the music being performed is still valid, and royalties must still be paid.

All true -- this whole discussion is about the changes to EU copyright law that took effect in 2012.The U.S. copyright laws are much more generous, ensuring that anyone with Disney lineage should be able to live a life of luxury without lifting a finger for at least a few more generations.

Well unless we hear about a video or tracks dropping on itunes and the likes in the next 36 hours, the JWH sessions will stay in the vault forever....

Making predictions about anything within Bob's orbit is always a risky venture.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

The 1962 set was released as physical product to select brick and mortar shops on December 27th, 2012. Looks like that didn't happen this year, though.

Oh well...
This won’t be the motivating reason to go to Tulsa,
but glad it’s there.

Sorry for being so ignorant, BUT could one of you explain to a rookie what you are talking about?? Please in lay-mans terms. Not links to other threads, I never understand them. Doh.

This is obviously a lame ploy to get them to release it. If I’m wrong I’ll buy everyone in this thread 1 mp3 of their choice.
