For the record, this is what was done:

phpbb search function not working from about 10.06.2016 to 15.06

Settings were:
Enable search facilities: Y
User search flood interval: 5 seconds
Guest search flood interval: 10 seconds
Search page system load limit: 1
Min author name characters: 5
Search result cache length: 1800 seconds
Search backend: Fulltext native

Changed to
Enable search facilities: Y
User search flood interval: 10 seconds
Guest search flood interval: 20 seconds
Search page system load limit: 1
Min author name characters: 5
Search result cache length: seconds
Search backend: Fulltext native

I have no idea if this was what did the trick, or just time itself.
