Nikki Jean & Bob Dylan, 2011. 'Steel & Feathers (Don't Ever)'...revision of Shabtai Zisel/Bob Dylan's 23 April 1981 'Don't Ever Take Yourself Away'

Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to a place where I can't find you
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you, I will never deceive you I'll be right there walkin behind you

Take your time, take my confession, take my crime
Take the halo I'm hiding and faith I got ridin on you

Rob me blind, I'd still see the best in human kind
In the way you make this broken world all shiny and new

Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to a place where I can't find you
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you, I will never deceive you I'll be right there walkin behind you

Take a cab to that little old diner and take a stab
At piecing together the steel and the feathers that make me

I've been told my hand is a hard one to hold
I fly or I sing but give me poison I'll drink if you make me

Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to a place where I can't find you
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you, I will never deceive you I'll be right there walkin behind you

Take my tears to water the flower garden
Take my years so we can grow but
Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to a place where I can't find you
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you, I will never deceive you I'll be right there walkin behind you

It's difficult to say either way since only 'take 2' ever surfaced, but she seems to have just taken the chorus from Dylan and re-wrote all of the verses to form her own prayer. It's hard to see this as a collaboration in the true sense unless you have aural / written evidence to prove otherwise? I did note that you used the word 'revision' though.
Still, it was nice to go back and listen to the song with the lyric at hand, it really is quite beautiful.

Interesting too to find this from 'Hawaii Five-O: Original Songs From The Television Series Soundtrack':
Code:
Of particular note from this collection is a previously-unreleased Bob Dylan track, “Don’t Ever Take Yourself Away.” This island-flavored gem dates from recording sessions in the early 1980s, and was newly mixed and mastered for this soundtrack after being locked in the vaults for nearly 30 years.

I must track down a copy.

The original lyric:
Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to
A place where i can't find you.
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you
Will never deceive you
I'll be right there walkin' behind you.

Dearest, i think you're the one
I can't imagine
Anybody doin'
More to me than you do.
Dearest, if it's your heart that i won
There's no need for blame
And no reason to be ashamed
Of that place where we stand in the sun.

Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to
A place where i can't find you.
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you
I will never deceive you
I'll be right there walkin' behind you.

Dearest, let us not drift apart
It wouldn't be wise
It wouldn't be civilized
It wouldn't be smart.
Time heals a broken heart
You've been hurt
You've been left in the dirt
But you still look brand new to me.

Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to
A place where i can't find you.
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you
I will never deceive you
I'll be right there walkin' behind you.

Dearest, you're the answer to my prayers
Words can't express
If my heart would confess
What you mean to me.
Dearest, i can't help knowin' that you're the best
I don't have to feel
You to know that you're real
You're more than a dream to me.

Don't ever take yourself away
Don't ever take yourself to
A place where i can't find you.
Don't ever take yourself away
I will never leave you
I will never deceive you
I'll be right there walking behind you.

Shalom & boker tov/good morning, hollowhorn! I have little more data. She told an interviewer that Jeff Rosen provided her with material -- exactly what I am unsure of (?demo tape)...

So its a lyrics revision -- the melody/rhythm seems pretty much the same as the original. I like the original lyrics as they are. Nice to know they (?) are open to lyric revisions, tho. I wonder if you need to be a professional to get an ok? I sent in a request back in the late 70s/early80s re some Dylan lyrics sans music (which I made up) and I got back a letter saying (with a few more words) -- No. The letter was from Naomi(?) -- I think. Her name started w/an N.

How about complete music re-do? I rewrote music to "If Dogs Run Free". Couldn't wait to hear what it sounded like (back in the day before internet) when I read the lyrics. Just started making up my own music to a lot of the "New Morning" lyrics and well as random others. Some ended up being similar (Father of Night) some -- not so much (If Dogs Run Free).
