From the Rome interview. Does Bob really not think he has hard-core fans? He is that sheltered from the world? Kinda a sad thought...

If he does believe that, its an indication he doesn't spend any time on Expecting Rain.

I wonder if that privately taped interview being shared by thousands around the world changed his mind.

That interview was also 17 years ago, keep in mind. I wonder if his opinion has changed since.

If you remember the 1986 BBC Omnibus interview with Sykes.
Dylan talks candidly about hardcore fans, how they follow
him around and even change their name. Shows he’s quite perfectly
aware of the nature of his fan base. Segment starts at 4.00
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bRwbpXYfAXg
I think Dylan often deflects things that cause either pressure or
discomfort, hence the Rome comments.

I think we all annoy the crap out of Bob and he said that to make us feel bad.

Dylan knows that language is a virus. He's known for a long time, ever since he was a young man.

I guess "private" is the wrong, it was meant for public dissemination, but the journalist's audio recordings were not.

I don't suppose being a "hardcore" fan increases one's "value" as a human being. Being a "hardcore" consumer is probably nothing to be particularly proud of either. Or perhaps that is the measuring stick some folks use to weigh their own purpose/worth. Maybe Dylan meant he does not want any hardcore fans. Or he hopes he doesn't have any, for their own sake. I'd rather not speculate too much.

I think this phrase alone shows that you shouldn't take to seriously the things Bob says during an interview.

Even if we take it that the line has some autobiographical significance, an unreasonably large assumption to make in my opinion, why shouldn't it be interpreted as referring to his friends, family, the collaborators in his recordings, even to the members of his touring band - all people who went along with him, rather than fans who simply turned up where he was.

he most likely nicked that phrase from Moby Dick or some other book or film.

Interpretation Its in the eye of the beholder
Nicked.. and ?
Why get grumpy; I´m sure Bob needs and loves us and includes us in the dynamic of the concerts.
He wants to reach out to new listeners but we carry him, the band and the whole superhuman crew. We are all part of the magic moments and also in the not so good days.
Otherwise the shows would be totally meaningless...I believe.

I think all the musicians coming out of the 60's dealt with crazy fans. People looking for answers or simply just to meet them. Bob's no different with all those folks showing up at the house and bothering his wife.

I guess and hope there is a distinction between "hard core fans" and stalkers?

Sure there's a distinction of sorts but it depends. I'm just saying Bob's obviously been aware of the "hardcore" fans from very early on in his career. That term can mean a lot of different things.

Yes, I do believe his fans are the army he recruited from the orphanages.

Bob might just as well be referring to his dogs when he mentions his loyal and much-loved companions, it's a far more accurate description of them than of his fans, however hardcore his fans might be.
