Does it simply mean a relationship gone bad or does Bob mean something bigger here?

Does he mean he sometimes feels he has lost the capacity to love in general?

It's just a play on "I'm sick of this love" / "I need more of this love"

From my understanding, the song is about pining away for a love he either lost or never got. When he sees those lovers in the distance , it brings forth a deep feeling of disgust, because it makes him miss her.

This:
"I wish I'd never met you, I'm trying to forget you and I'd give anything to be with you."

This. "Lovesick" usually means infatuated, hopelessly in love; he uses it to mean both that and the opposite, sick of love.

It is also a Bible verse from the Song of Solomon, which is an exquisite, very explicit poem in the Old Testament about human sexual passion in marriage on one level, and the relationship between Christ Jesus and His Church (also known as His Bride) on another.

King James Bible, Song 5:8 wrote:
I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem,
If ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love.

The term 'lovesick' is, at its core, a pun that the song plays out to full effect - sick for love, sick from love, sick of love. There are subtle differences, all turned around by the final declaration that, despite this, he wants more of the woman that he's sick of/from/with: "I'd do anything to be with you". The notion that love causes pain and yet you want more of it is pretty well-trodden territory; from Blood On The Tracks to Shakespeare.

After unsuccessful relationships, and at a certain age in one's late 50s, I can well understand why a man would be sick of love. It's better to sleep alone.

But why do young women like men old enough to be their Grandaddy? Beats me!!

(The latter only by revisionist interpretation)

Shakespeare's Sonnet 147:

My love is as a fever, longing still
For that which longer nurseth the disease,
Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill,
Th’ uncertain sickly appetite to please.
My reason, the physician to my love,
Angry that his prescriptions are not kept,
Hath left me, and I desperate now approve
Desire is death, which physic did except.
Past cure I am, now reason is past care,
And frantic-mad with evermore unrest;
My thoughts and my discourse as madmen’s are,
At random from the truth vainly expressed:
For I have sworn thee fair, and thought thee bright,
Who art as black as hell, as dark as night.

Twelfth Night:

If music be the food of love, play on;
Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.

Buckets Of Rain:

I like the smile
And (in?) your fingertips
I like the way that you move your hips
I like the cool way you look at me
Everything about you is bringing me misery

I hate to think it's all over; I lost my heart it seems
I've grown so used to you somehow
But I'm nobody's sugar daddy now
And I'm lonesome, I got the lovesick blues

Wow. Hank was an excellent writer as well. Not Bob, but who is?
I still ask, what's over? The relationship? The writer's eros prime? The writer's ability to love?

He was. But he didn't write Lovesick Blues.

Yep. Agape takes over from Eros at any given time.

This answer ends the thread, basically.

Right on target so direct. The lyrics of Love Sick back this notion.

I drifted into the bob and depression thread and an emotionless void.
