Is there a definitive list of the most essential concerts out there? I've searched through the forum and most threads seem to focus on a single year or years. Is there a list that spans his whole career?

I'm working on compiling the best shows from all years (sound, performance, history). It is a work in progress (lacking many shows for now from the 1980's and 1999-2001), but I think it is a good start for most. Here they are:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 7qbs-uRBNY (Top 100 Concerts)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 2xy_ejhG5L (Best shows of the NET)

There's this older thread here: http://expectingrain.com/discussions/vi ... hp?t=21208

Top 75 shows from a poll; ends after 2006.

Manchester 1966 is an obvious choice for an essential concert

4 shows 1998-2000 and 9 shows 2008-2010? With another 5 in 2011/12??

I'm glad you liked that era, I think it's better than it's reputation, but I just can't wrap my mind around your ranking system.

There is so much to Dylan's NET, and such huge diversity in styles and moods, that it is natural that there will be huge variation in people's preferences. Indeed, my own preferences change as time moves on and sometimes change back again. When one looks at the variation and magnitude of the lists offered on this thread, it illustrates the enormous achievement of Dylan in his touring history of the last three decades. We are very fortunate.

There's so much good stuff to get hooked on but I think most of my favourites is the CC stuff from around the 2000 and 2002 era, I especially like the 2000 European tour shows. But at the end of the day it really is down to personal preference, you may have a favourite band line up or guitarist or set list. I think Rothbury 2009 is one of the last live albums I have, I don't have live albums with the song book stuff on I don't think.

Without any doubt the 19998-2002 stuff is underrepresented in the list - although it's of course always a questen of individual preferences. so in this respect there is nothing "wrong" with the list.

No, there's nothing at all wrong with the list - I'm just stating my own personal favourite period. Btw, I just discovered I had a CC recording of the 2013 Dusseldorf show. That's pretty good as well!
