mine is

"Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall"

what is yours?

North wind about to break
On footprints in the snow
Silence down below

Too many to choose from, but this one is pretty good

I noticed at the ceremony
Your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore
Your mouth has changed, your eyes don't look into mine
The priest wore black on the seventh day
And sat stone-faced while the building burned
I waited for you on the running boards
Near the cypress trees, while the springtime turned
Slowly into autumn

I was burned out from exhaustion
Buried in the hail
Poisoned in the bushes
Blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile
Ravaged in the corn
"Come in", she said, "I'll give you shelter from the storm"

Preacher was a talkin’, there’s a sermon he gave
He said every man’s conscience is vile and depraved
You cannot depend on it to be your guide
When it’s you who must keep it satisfied
It ain’t easy to swallow, it sticks in the throat
She gave her heart to the man
In the long black coat

Shelter from the storm is one of my favorite songs from Bob, what about this verse puts it above the other great ones for you?

I have many favourites but Love Minus Zero immediately came to mind so maybe one from that. All four are sublime. Can't pick just one. Another one that comes to mind that probably won't get mentioned as much...

"Outside of two men on a train platform there's nothing
In sight
They're waiting for spring to come, smoking down the
track
The world could come to an end tonight, but that's all
right
She could still be there sleeping when I get back."

I think it has just as much to do with the way he sings it than anything. Love the Real Live version too.

That's evocative alright
If I had to pick one, it would be the last verse of Mr. Tambourine Man. Just sublime.

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

So many, and the one chosen by Charles is most certainly among them, but at the moment my favorite is

The hillside darkly shaded
Stars fall from above
All the joys of earth have faded
The night's untouched my love

He said let's build us a fort and starting buying the place with beads
Just then a cop come down the street as crazy as a loon
they throw us all in jail for carry'in harpoons.

It was 1965, and as an 8 year old, I loved this lyrical dexterity.

Man’s ego's inflated, his laws are outdated, they don’t apply no more
You can’t rely no more to be standin’ around waitin'
In the home of the brave
Jefferson turnin’ over in his grave
Fools glorify themselves, try to manipulate Satan
And there’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend

Big-time negotiators, false healers and woman haters
Masters of the bluff and masters of the proposition
But the enemy I see
Wears a cloak of decency
All nonbelievers and men stealers talkin’ in the name of religion
And there’s a slow, slow train comin’ up around the bend

Who else would dare?! Who else could sing the word "manipulate" as easy as others sing moon-june-spoon? Who else can attach a message of such import to music that makes dancing so teasingly irresistible? This is why I love Bob Dylan.

Have way too many favorites!
At this instance in time this came up:

Well the weak get weaker and the strong stay strong
The train keeps rolling all night long
She looked at me with an irresistable glance
And a smile that could make all the planets dance

This is so unoriginal and of course I actually have about 500 favourites, but it has to be this one, too:

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,

With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,

Shelter from the storm is one of my favorite songs from Bob, what about this verse puts it above the other great ones for you?

Just the flow and sound of these images has always struck a chord with me. No other explanation. Of course the whole song is superb.

And when I hear/sing this verse in my head it's always the Hard Rain version.

We eat and we drink, we feel and we think
Far down the street we stray
I laugh and I cry and I'm haunted by
Things I never meant nor wished to say
The midnight rain follows the train
We all wear the same thorny crown
Soul to soul, our shadows roll
And I'll be with you when the deal goes down

Bob uses "rain" and "train" so often in his verses, doesn't he? And somehow those verses are always beautiful.

Hadn't really thought about other train/rain rhymes - but now that you mention it...yes! I think this is one of Bob's most beautiful later works. Also love "More frailer than the flowers, these precious hours"...

If I'd thought about it I never would've done it
I guess I would've let it slide
If I'd-a paid attention to what others were thinkin'
The heart inside me would've died
But I was just too stubborn to ever be governed by enforced insanity
Someone had to reach for the risin' star
I guess it was up to me

I love the last verse of 'Red River Shore':

Now, I've heard of a guy who lived a long time ago
A man full of sorrow and strife
Whenever someone around him died or was dead
He knew how to bring 'em on back to life
Well, I don't know what kind of language he used
Or if they do that kind of thing anymore
Sometimes I think nobody ever saw me here at all
Except the girl from the Red River Shore

Especially if there's a mule or two in there as well.
