While it was fun, I had a lot of trouble picking my top three tracks off of Saved a month or two ago. I figured Tempest would be a good album to ask people what their three favorite tracks are. What a fantastic album, Duquesne Whistle to Early Roman Kings is a fantastic run of songs. The last three songs, in my eyes anyway, are still great songs but ones I have to be in a particular mood to listen to if I'm not just listening to the album in full. When push comes to shove I think Long and Wasted Years, Pay in Blood, and Scarlet Town make the top three (maybe swapping out Scarlet Town for Narrow Way). What are yours?

Narrow Way is proving to be an enduring song, it just gets better.

The rest, hmm, probably ST and LAWY.

Early Roman Kings is the only track I don't care for. Tempest rates as one of Bob's finer studio achievements in my book.

On many albums my top 3 vary from time to time.
On this one my gut hasn’t changed from my first 3 or 5 solid listening sessions from hearing the album when it was released.

Narrow way is a triumphant return to the one riff long angry man type song that we hadn’t gotten for a long time, and a wonderful capture of the wolfman voice we all came to love during the years leading into Tempest

Long and Wasted Years easily fits into upper tier of greatest Dylan songs ever written.

And Tin Angel is the best rap song I’ve heard since It’s alright ma.

Soon after midnight
Long and wasted years
Roll on John

Honorable mention: Tin angel

And I will explode if I don´t say that Early roman kings and Tempest are 2 of the most boring songs Bob has ever recorded (sorry)

Tin Angel
Scarlet Down
Long and Wasted Years
4th vote would have gone to Duquesne Whistle.

I don't get the love for Soon After Midnight. Song bores me.

Soon After Midnight, Scarlet Town, Pay in Blood. Each equally great and each totally different.

Soon After Midnight, Long And Wasted Years, Pay In Blood.
There's some really great live versions of these three.
Scarlet Town would make it top 4.

1st choice is easily Long and Wasted Years for me.

There's no way Duquesne Whistle isn't making the cut, so that's a natural #2.

3rd place is at least a four-way tie so I didn't use my third vote just yet.

For today it’s:
- Narrow
- Early
- Roll

Wanted to go Long, but ran outta votes.

Tired of / bored with:
Soon, Scarlet & Duquesne...

^ Someone admits it. DW is boring, it was boring right from the start, when you first heard it, and you all know it.

Nice to see some love for Tin Angel! I agree with Long and Wasted Years, I think it's a fantastic song that rubs shoulders with his best material. Soon After Midnight sometimes reminds me of Sweetheart Like You, but more charming in my opinion. I'm a proud member of the Narrow Way fan club too! Maybe that's the third pick.

For today:

1. Scarlet Town
2. Tin Angel
3. Pay in Blood

Fantastic album, his finest 21st century work and an insane, sweeping, cinematic ride. If it were a film, it would be Cape Fear.

I love that Early Roman Kings is coming in dead last, and it's also his most-performed song off the album. That seems pretty typical.

Early Roman Kings is about six verses too long... Shorter song with different lyrics, re-arrange the tune... maybe that would make it better.

It is the only song since Street - Legal that I hit "Skip" when it comes on.

I like it. I think it's very topical.

Scarlet Town, Pay In Blood and Tin Angel for me, though it hurts to neglect Soon After Midnight. The only songs I don't love are DW and ERK, but otherwise - what an album! His best 21st century work? Maybe, but I don't want to choose.

ERK is nt one of the stronger tracks but I've come round to it a lot over the years all the same. There's some great lyrics in there and the live versions have soared on occasion.

The final 3 tracks deserve way more credit than they get imho; they're like a mini album in themselves. Granted you have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to tracks that lengthy and I accept the title track could be significantly trimmed (but the good stuff in there is really good and it remains a quality entry in my book) but if you can find the time and are willing to sink into those final epic tracks, they reward greatly and help give the work its distinctive widescreen feel.

I'm listening to Tempest right now. :D

I'd say:
Scarlet Town
Long and Wasted Years
Tin Angel

I chose Narrow Way, Pay in Blood and Scarlet Town. A great, great album. While I didn't vote for Tempest, the blending of the event and and the movie in its lyrics often makes me smile at the ridiculousness of it.
