especially the live version, I personally thought it's one of the most melodic Dylan song ever. id say its in my top 5 favorite songs of him.

Welcome to ER. I agree, it's a good melody, one that, and correct me if I'm wrong, was an Irish tune borrowed from the Clancey Brothers. For my own part, I've always been very impressed with the contents of the lyrics, which Dylan considered weighty enough for the world to hear at Live-Aid.

Great writing for sure. He animates inanimate objects -

"the rocks on the sand will proudly stand"

He makes the wondrous look easy.

Joan Baez tells the story that this song was written after they couldn't get a room in
a motel somewhere, but of course, many others see a bigger picture...
