Post subject:  Why did GE Smith leave?

Does anybody know why GE Smith left the band? Or was he pushed to leave?
I've been watching some late 1990 shows and there seemed to be good vibes on stage between him and Dylan at that late stage in his tenure...

He chose SNL over staying with Bob.

Bob wanted him to stay on, offered him a raise, but he turned it down, as SNL was offering more money, and a false sense of security there.

What a stupid decision on his part.

What a shame.

Wow. That really is a shame. I thought they were doing some great things in 1990.

WOW. Didn´t know this.
I guess it sounds stupid in a way, but understandable if you are tired of touring and want to buy a ranch, settle down and have a regular steady gig.

Wasn't GE Smith also cheesed off that Dylan recorded Oh Mercy without involving him?

Not sure if it was stupid.
G.E. Smith speaks about quitting Bob, in the last minute of this little vid clip reminiscing about Bob.

GE was the most dramatic lead player Bob has had, in my opinion. He really seemed into it and totally thrilled to be playing with Bob. In that video clip where he talks about playing with Bob, it's pretty clear he still worships Bob and treasures the experience. You also get the impression that Bob's style is pretty much different from anyone out there - in a good way.

I've never read or heard GE say that, but I sure would've been.

GE Smith has quite a resume'. While being Dylan's guitarist might be the gig of a lifetime for most guitarists, it's just one of many for GE.

I think he felt underpaid as well. Clinton what's-his-name goes into some detail, including an astonishingly small salary for John Jackson. GE was a great player and great foil for Dylan, one had to really be able to roll with the punches in those days, and he does it with great style. His interview clips are fun, too.

GE is a great player, but I think it was good he left. New blood.

What about now trevgibb? New blood required?

To head the Saturday Night Live band.

If he was getting paid more money it was the right call to make.

Bob wasn't doing anything particularly special in the years G.E. Smith was in his band.

Judging by the Chicago footage on YouTube, nope. Amazing band.

I'm glad he left - he deserves credit for his role in launching the NET, but he's not exactly subtle in his playing and a bit of a showboat.

Money, what seemed like greater stability on a network TV show (and the ability to actually be at home to raise his family) were likely factors in his leaving, but I also heard he wanted to play on Dylan's albums, and that wasn't happening.

GE Smith recently said he could still be there in Dylan's band
had he chose to be, Dylan was desperate to keep him, not
something many players can say, so he must have been doing
something right. Had he stayed, he wouldn't have gained the profile
nor the money (and probably wouldn't have had his own signiture
guitar released) that he got by being on SNL.
Dylan had a habit of not allowing his touring
band record on his albums back then, but Oh Mercy might have
been interesting with GE Smith on there, i loved the work he
did with Dylan's shows from 88/90 and ''What Was It You Wanted''
and the electric ''Gates Of Eden'' were excellent.

I thought GE was great too. Belfast made a good point that GE was a bit of a showboat, but really, that's what lead guitar is all about, and I loved his intense style. Ironically, Duke Robillard was dumped for showboating(or at least that is the most common assumption), but it was a different situation. Duke was doing standout acoustic leads on a few songs(Tangled) and at the show I was at - he got his own huge applause from the crowd - THAT to me was his ticket to the exit.
