That old black magic has me in its spell
That old black magic that you weave so well
Icy fingers up
And down my spine
The same old witchcraft when your eyes meet mine
The same old tingle that i feel Inside
When that elevator starts its ride
Down and down i go, round and round i go
Like a leaf that's
Caught in the tide

I should stay away but what can i do
I hear your name, and i'm aflame
Aflame with
Such a burning desire
That only your kiss can put out the fire
You are the lover that i've waited for
The mate that fate had me created for
And every time your lips meet mine
Baby down and down i go,
All around i go
In a spin, loving the spin that i'm in
Under that old black magic called love

It seems that everyone who is anyone has recorded this song so of course Bob had to as well...
This great was written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. According to Wiki, the song was written with Judy garland in mind but first recorded with the Glenn Miller orchestra. It's such an amazing song with such a fascinating construction. What strikes me most about its history is how there is really no one definitive version. Everyone that performs it can't help but put their stamp.
Frank recorded it twice...once in 1942 with Axel Stordahl. This first one was sung as a ballad and here's a version found on a V disc
for the troops overseas in WWII:

The second swinging version that Frank did with Billy May is also the more famous. It's just a perfect rendition with the best phrasing and a beautifully restrained orchestral arrangement that highlights Frank's brilliant delivery.
Bob's version is its own beast. If it resembles anyone's, it might just be Louis Prima and Keely Smith's wildly infectious one. Theirs might be my personal favorite:

That said, Bob's arrangement might be similar but the intention is very different:

Luckily, Bob has taken this one on the road and it's a real highlight of The Set when its there. I especially loved it when he brought it out last Spring in Japan. Here's a couple really magical ones from Tokyo that you could tell Bob was into:

Tokyo Japan

And then another as he was leaving town on the 23rd:

What do we think of this one everyone? Love or hate??
Any good recommendations Bob or otherwise??

Tokyo is okay, the intent is admirable but the band is sloppy.
