And as we know, his gospel shows displayed amazing
vocals that he would never better again.
I'd say after 1981 his range and pitch were becoming
less elastic. But the husk in his voice, that didn't become
apparent until 1988/9. Silvio & Tweeter are two good tracks
to compare, pretty much compare anything from DITG to
Oh Mercy or Travelling Wilburys Vol1 and you'll hear the
new gruffer, huskier sound.

Btw yopietro i have found it interesting chatting to you.
There's little more boring than talking to someone who agrees
with everything you think, your observations and conclusions
clearly differ to mine, and that's made for an interesting take
on a few topics tonight.

I do too, he sounds great on Love and Theft,
and when he sings in a rough voice it's nothing like Howlin' Wolf's voice,
if he was trying to sound like anyone at all I'd say Louis Armstrong.
I love Howlin' Wolf and was shocked anyone would think Bob was trying to sound like him.

His damage started way before that. He blew a gasket sometime before recording Street-Legal. The dropoff from Desire to SL is significant. (His voice would never again sound as good as it did on Desire). And then his voice gets thinner in the 80's, culminating in a dreadful thin helium voice that has no body to it.


Street-Legal, Shot of Love, Infidels; all 3 have much smoother and more enjoyable vocals than Desire imho. At least for my ears.
