Just ran across the video for Beyond Here Lies Nothing... my first encounter with it. Immediately I wondered if there was a connection with Unbelieveable which I'd watched earlier. Both videos have hotels in them, alluring ladies figure prominently in the story, and both videos are darker than the lyrics themselves convey (to me, anyway). In fact, Beyond Here Lies Nothing made me uncomfortable and just about the point where I felt redemption, it twists and leaves me feeling even more uncomfortable.

Unbelieveable I've seen numerous times. Its not as dark as Beyond Here Lies Nothing but it certainly isn't "Disney magic" either. A hotel with a sensuous encounter takes place, there's the pig being chauffered in a limo driven by Bob... and Bob keeps popping up in the video to keep the plot moving. It hilarious and almost bizarre. And at the end as the limo pulls away, the license plate reveals...

LSD 752. Quite a trip?

Sara mentions the Chelsea Hotel? And while Sara has a nostalgic glow about it, the reality is, the gig is up, the marriage is ending and darkness has settled in on the relationship.

Are there other Dylan songs mingling hotels and strange, dark, strained themes?

I need some help unpacking these... Anyone else... Your comments and insights, please?

Thanks, I'd never seen that video for Unbelievable before. It's actually pretty cool - like you say, very similar to, but at the same time a lot better than the video for Beyond Here Lies Nothin'.

I don't know if I can offer many insights: in both cases I feel that the storylines of the videos don't really have all that much to do with the song lyrics. But to help the conversation along, I can think of a couple of hotels. In songs, the hotel room in When I Paint My Masterpiece, and the strange hotel in Simple Twist Of Fate. And of course, many notible moments of Dylan on camera take place in hotels (think Don't Look Back, Renaldo & Clara).

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the clip for Tight Connection To My Heart is (at least partly) set in a hotel room as well..

Art mirrors life - a lot of Bob's life has been in hotels and motels. It's a natural element for him to use. I noticed the LSD license plate too. Who knows? Just another brain twister thrown in by the master tosser.

The "Saint James Hotel" in "Blind Willie McTell."

He's spent enough time in hotels in his life. Note how many of the interviews that he does take place in hotels. The LOVE AND THEFT photographer I met years ago who took the album's booklet photos told me the sessions for those photographs were in various hotels in Los Angeles.

My favourite hotel reference is in Po' Boy....

Poor boy, in the hotel called the Palace of Gloom
Calls down to room service, says send up a room

Today's the day Rev said nothing can beat a post 2000 Dylan song.

My favorite po' boy reference is in this song:

Some of his best movie songs (songs that could be movies) are set in hotels or the like (at least in my mind):

Black Diamond Bay
Lily, Rosemary and Jack of Hearts
Simple Twist of Fate
Went to See the Gypsy

He had a job in Santa Fe
Working in an old hotel
But he never did like it all that much
so one day it just went to hell.

From among the many versions of Tangled Up In Blue - which also featured the Flamingo Hotel in another version, now I come to think of it.
