I mean, since the OP supposes we have the possibility of time travel, I'd go to....

- 1995
- 1999
- 1975
- 1976
- 2000
- 2001
- 1998
- 1990
- 1988
- 1996

....before I'd even consider going anywhere near the 1960s. But time travel also means that I can fast forward / backward from the end of one concert right to the beginning of the next. So if I was dissatisfied with 1966, I could always go to 2013 next.

Good night, barney.

I'd go to the year you were born and kidnap you to raise you in such a way you wouldn't think of having a time machine to go back in time and see Bob
(it's just a joke... hope it doesn't offend you :) )

There is no wrong answer. Remember the question was ...

"If you could only see Dylan perform live once, in either 1966 or 2012, which year would you choose?"

Myself I'd choose 2012. I want to hang out at a place where the real Bob Dylan, who is the Bob Dylan of today, not some guy from a long time ago, is trying his best to make some music, it doesn't matter if it's better or worse than something else, if I get entertained fine, if not fine, it's my Bob up there and he's my guy (one of them anyway), and if I miss the concert that's all right I got the albums.

I have seen Bob live a few times since 2003. I did not get the chance to see Bob in 1966 (as I had yet to reach my first birthday). So it would be fun to see Bob in 1966.

If the question really means: If you had to choose 1 Bob performance in your life to see, which would you choose? That's a scenario that's tough to imagine. Just too many factors. The whole thing that makes Bob interesting to me is context. The NET is interesting because I have not only the original song in my head, but multiple and varied versions through the years dancing around up there with that "sacred" album take. Fun to consider, though.

Oh, come on. I am a gigantic fan of 'later' Bob - in fact, I prefer his post-60s work as a rule - but the Bob of 1966 is THE Bob, a genius with total 'dominion over the spirits' and pushing that dominion as far as it can conceivably go. When I play the second disc of Live 1966 it just seems blazingly obvious that this is that rarest of articles: an artist so far given over to his own wild genius as to be unreachable and unmatched. Seeing Dylan in 1966 is seeing an historic event, the greatest musical artist of his era and one of the greatest American artists ever, at his absolute peak. I'll take that over the more subdued and questionable charms of 2012, thanks.

Yep. Very well put, I might add. That's some cachet, to have been a part of history and be able to say you saw Bob Dylan in '66. I have a friend whose elder sister saw him in Bristol that year, and even though I've never met her, I think of her as somehow being a bit special.
