It is. Yes it is.
(Except for the guy in the audience deciding that he would like to sing along. Don't you love them?)
Thanks, Raging!

Would someone be cool enough to put Delia from the last las vegas show, either a streaming version or a post to a youtube?

The key to the whole thing, of course, is the devastating refrain: all the friends I ever had are gone...

Delia's parents say it. Curtis (Cuttey?) says it. The judge says it upon condemning him. The song's narrator says it. It's as though there's a loneliness at the heart of the whole world, which is ultimately what explains all this tragedy, all this cruelty. He killed her, why? On some level, it's because 'all the friends he ever had are gone.' The judge pitilessly condemns him for life, why? Because 'all the friends he ever had are gone.' In the lamentation of the parents, Delia's death is really just one more woe piled atop this primal wound. Even the singer, he seems to be relaying this tale as a metaphor for some inexplicable underlying grief. The primordial loneliness becomes something almost like original sin, the central loss that drives everything else.

It's a great example of how traditional songs can work, that pastiche technique that consciously or unconsciously brings together distinctive motifs that deepen one another.

That could be too literal an interpretation. I don't see that the speakers of each line have to be the speaker of the refrain. The song centres around an uncertain, possibly shifting, narrator. I see the refrain as the centre of the song, reverted to each time by the singer, who is, i suppose, a sort of existential character (doesn't exist except to sing the refrain). I tend to see the whole song as sung by the killer, years after his sentence, when all those events are long, long ago and seem to have been perpetrated by someone else, hence the reference to his former self as "Curdy".

Just my take on it. Possibly the second best song on the album.

This is well worth reading, has a chapter on Delia as well as several other Dylan related songs.

Pretty sure I've asked this before, but does anyone have Dylan singing Delia in 1960 at Karen Wallace's apartment? I've searched endlessly and still haven't been able to find it.

Los Angeles 1992. The title in the video is a mistake (not from 1988).

The only other song that touches on Loss deeper is 'Black Muddy River' or was it 'Days Between' , two dead songs, one I believe about the untimely loss of the lyricist's son.

This wasn't long after the breakup of Dylan's second marriage, so the feelings may have been very personal.

If the article in the Guardian is anything to go by, Dylan seems to have recovered this song for Delia. My sympathies were only for her in this song, long before I ever heard what it was about.

^ Funny, since yesterday I hear Dylan's version differently.

From Hard rain via Chimes of freedom, Gates of Eden, Desolation row and Watchtower to 'Sometimes I think this whole world is one big prison yard, some of us are prisoners, some of us are guards'

'You loved all them rounders'

Not me, the free spirit

(That said, what I really dig on WGW are Ragged & dirty and Lone pilgrim and sometimes Two soldiers)

But, yeah, submerge your personality... :)

Sorry, but Dylan the outlaw rebel is just his evening job. He welds the gates during daylight.

Always like seeing him play this version from Newcastle 2000, can really tell when hes into a song in his eyes. Plus, the vid also includes clips from Searching for A Soldier's Grave, Country Pie and Standing in the Doorway
