Here's a gorgeous version of this song from 2005.
A truly ethereal rendition which finds Bob singing so expressively and connected to this song.
And that expression continues and actually deepens in a harmonica solo that is so perfect...
There's a deep melancholy to this song that Bob sometimes has a hard time tapping into.
But here it's very present and perfectly expressed...

I love this version too John B. It always puts a lump in my throat. There's something so sensitive
about the way they play this one this time...
So beautifully played and Bob sings this in such an incredibly tender way despite and in accord with those ragged vocals...
It's rather an extraordinary rendition:

I love the raw swagger of this performance from 2011.
It's the opposite of what we hear today but for some reason this
version cuts deep.
Bob seems defiant here, like the song is a reaffirmation
of his place in time in 2011. The harp really does the melancholy work here
with another poignant solo. George's relaxed but insistent rhythm is a factor of this one's power as well....
Funny what 6 years can do...

quick story..i first saw bob live in the fall of 2003 where he was suffering from a throat infection.. this combined with the poor sound in the venue and the fact i had no clue what he at that time sounded like added up to a confusing night..i barely understood a word but at the same time the sounds of the words were enthralling in some way..it's was like some language i had yet to come to fully comprehend...so after this i got fully into buying his album's and listening to boots but they mainly consisted of everything up to 75/76.. i had still yet to discover oh mercy, time out of mind and love and theft..yet as soon a i heard he was playing pearse stadium in the summer of 2004 in Galway i bought tickets and organised the trip..now i was more equipped this time around and bob was in fine voice..the power of it knocked me off my feet at times.. the most heart-stopping, show stopping moment came as the light began to fade, the sun was sinking over the crowd and he began to sing 'not dark yet'.. he couldn't have timed it any better..the crowd vanished around me as i intently listened to every word and had what i can only describe as a transcendent experience..almost religious in nature..i don't think i said a word to my then girlfriend or the rest of our friends that whole evening or the whole train ride back to dublin later that night..actually i don't think ive been the same ever since..
a chilly wind blows outside my door,
outside i know not what's in store,
i see blurry red taillights as i make my way,
and fires behind me where ive layed
I was just listening to this the other night. I was in there too. An amazing upbeat version of If You See Her Say Hello and some mighty harp solos. Your description of Bob singing Not Dark Yet as the sun set over Galway Bay is beautifully accurate. A show worth revisiting (and in great quality) :-)

Might be the first time watching the official vid.
Wasn’t even aware there was one.
Funny to hear the studio version after so long.
