Favourite couplet -
Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose
Any minute now I'm expecting all hell to break loose

Haunting cover to be heard here-

If the Bible is right, the world will explode.

Nowhere in the Bible does it suggest that the world will explode. (Though someone will now no doubt prove me wrong..)

might not mean a literal explosion, but maybe the chaos of the rapture?

The recent Nashville version was terrific.

II Peter 3:10 describes the judgment of fire upon the earth in which everything will be destroyed and the earth laid bare and in Revelation when the third trumpet sounds, one third of the earth will be burned. But the earth exploding? Maybe if one translates the text creatively but it isn't the general inference most people accept.

I don't recall how things shake out in the Shepherd of Hermas or the Apocalypse of Peter... perhaps one of the extra-canonical works describes the earth exploding as part of the judgment.

Does anyone know how long Bob has been performing this song in its current incarnation??
I'm thinking it was around 2012 that I started hearing the song in this way...
I love this song as an opener and in the present quality of performance form our man and his gang,
it's a perfect start to a great show....

And I truly love the rendition from the first show of his Minneapolis residency last year!!
He's shot out of a cannon and his phrasing and voice are impeccable and was the start of a fantastic concert....
I've listened to this one a number of times...

And here's an awesome version from Tokyo Japan back in April:

Nice one, cheers - those are both cracking versions.

Here's another one - from my remaster of the Detroit show in May this year:

if you like this and want the full show, its not publicly available but a PM will secure you some under the counter medicine.

That Detroit version is really good and the sound quality achieved via the link Hoss has just posted is transcendent.

During America's Second Great Awakening, circa 1810, it was commonly believed that explode rhymes with road.

I'm pretty sure it's been this way since 2011.

Still kicking off The Set, this song has improved over time right along with Bob's voice.
You can really hear how tight this group is now playing the same music for two years running
and last year gave us the great concert from Nashville...
Bob's voice sounds wonderfully controlled and he gives a creepy understated performance here:

I like the way the arrangement plays out but I love the studio take for this. It's a song I love to play on my Old Kraftsman guitar. Without a capo, those are some chunky chords. I only wish they found that alternate take for the bootleg series!

I have been to three Dylan shows so far and they all started with that song. It always gave me already major goosebumps when only the intro to that song started. It is really a great song to kick off the show. I always looked forwared to that and was never disappointed.

I want there to be a black T-shirt with the Eye Logo on top of the front and the back, and underneath the backside Logo are the words "Nothin' in front of me", while underneath the frontside Logo are the words "Nothin' behind".

We could make that.

I love it!
My favourite live version is from Portsmouth 2000, it's on the "Bob Dylan Live 1961-2000 Japan compilation.
Of the younger versions, it's Glasgow 2014 for me.
Unfortunatly it's a lot weaker since then, imho.

Just ran across a solid old-school version of this and thought I'd share it...
Bob sounds beautifully ravaged here, the song sounds perfectly lived in.
Bob's def feeling this one in 05!!
And Donnie's violin solos are so dope. Why doesn't Bob let him play that anymore except for BITW??

My favorite lines:

There’s a woman on my lap and she’s drinking champagne
Got white skin, got assassin’s eyes

It has real nice imagery. 8)

I'm not sure the studio official take has ever been beaten. Tremendous track and a Mod Bob classic for sure.

The best song he has written in the last 20 odd years.
