Why all the hate for Dylan (1973)? Of course it is not Dylan's best work, but it is not that bad, is it?

I've spent 20 mins to make my list and 10 mins to choose the "best song" of that album.

It's that bad.

I have rated all the 34 studio albums + the two Bootleg series albums who has a lot of unreleased studio recordings on them. I have not rated them from 1 to 36 but placed them in groups. If I have to choose a #1, I will go for Street Legal (tomorrow i may choose Blood On The Tracks, Time Out Of Mind or the 3. CD of Bootleg Series 1-3)

MASTERPIECES
Freewheelin'
Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde On Blonde
Blood On The Tracks
Desire
Street Legal
Time Out Of Mind
Bootleg Series Vol 1-3 – Particulary the 3.rd CD.

VERY GOOD
The Times They Are-A-Changin’
Another Side Of
Bringing It All Back Home
Basement Tapes
Planet Waves
Slow Train Coming
Oh Mercy
Tell Tale Sign

GOOD
John Wesley Harding
Nashville Skyline
New Morning
Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid
Shot Of Love
Infidels
Love & Theft
Modern Times

OK
Bob Dylan
Saved
Empire Burlesque
Knocked Out Loaded
Good As I Been To You
World Gone Wrong
Together Through Life
Christmas In The heart

COULD HAVE BEEN SKIPPED
Selfportrait
Dylan
Down In The Grove
Under The Red Sky (THE ONLY BAD ONE)

i'm not good with anything other than top three:
JWH
BIABH
One of: BoB, BOOT, TOOM, or H61
but it still should be mentioned the basement tape recordings (beyond what has been officially released) is where his true genius lies.

Studio albums you need:
Bob Dylan
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Times They Are A Changin'
Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Blonde On Blonde
John Wesley Harding
The Basement Tapes
Blood On The Tracks
Desire

Live albums you need:
Live '66
Live '75
Hard Rain

If you want to include variants of some of these (e.g. the vastly superior half-speed vinyl of BoTT or the mono vs stereo debate), fine.

But you really, really dont need anything else to get your fix of primo Bob.

The first record is sophomoric, pretty dreadful. Really, if that's your taste, go listen to the originals because he didn't come close.

I find it impossible to rank the albums once I get past my first couple of favorites because I find merit in all of them (of the ones that I have..26 so far.)

I agree with Bennyboy on the first release. It's great. Bob inhabits those songs. Plus it has Song To Woody.

Then "Down In The Groove" is perfect album, just because it has "Rank Strangers" & "Ninety Miles an Hour". And I'm not just saying this to piss off Bennyboy (love ya mate!) I really think this album is underrated. "Under The Red Sky" is pretty bad, "Self Portrait" is worthless, "GIABTY" is passable, but "Down In The Groove" is quite good.

I have my own "complete list" but I'm too lazy to put it here.

Wow, you have managed to say the exact opposite of my views on Dylan's first album. Well done! Bob Dylan's first album is my favourite of all of his albums (not saying it is the best, that would be Freewheelin', just my favourite).

Um, wouldn't the first album be considered freshmanic?

Was gifted a nice bottle of wine, have about 2 hours to myself, Highway 61 on the record player (just received the sony mono vinyl box), and been meaning to give this thread a go these part five years but never had the time. I don't have a good sense of what's best, or even what my favorites always are, so these are in the order of how often I reach for the record or CD. I intend to be good good and buzzed by the time I reach the end of this exercise. Merry Christmas, everyone.

1. Bringing it All Back Home (Mr. Tambourine Man)
2. Highway 61 (It Takes a Lot to Laugh)
3. Blood on the Tracks (Tangled up in Blue)
4. John Wesley Harding (Watchtower)
5. Love & Theft (Po Boy)
6. Bootleg Series 1-3 (Blind Willie)
7. World Gone Wrong (Lone Pilgrim)
8. Bootleg Series: Another Self Portrait (When I Paint My Masterpiece)
9. Blonde on Blonde (Visions of Johanna)
10. Bootleg Series: Tell Tale Signs (Red River Shore)
11. Bootleg Series: Live 1975 (Hard Rain)
12. Hard Rain (Idiot Wind)
13. Freewheelin' (Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall)
14. Tempest (Narrow Way)
15. Bootleg Series: Live 1966 (Just Like Tom Thumb)
16. Time Out of Mind (Highlands)
17. The Times They Are A-Changing (Boots)
18. Another Side (Chimes of Freedom)
19. New Morning (Sign on the Window)
20. Street-Legal (Where Are You Tonight)
21. Modern Times (Thunder)
22. Basement Tapes (This Wheel's on Fire--when the inevitable Bootleg Series is released it'll shoot up into the top 10)
23. Desire (Isis)
24. Bob Dylan (Song to Woody)
25. Good As I Been to You (Hard Times)
26. Oh Mercy (Ring Them Bells)
27. Planet Waves (Forever Young)

30. Shot of Love (Every Grain of Sand)

33. Slow Train Coming (I Believe in You)
34. Bootleg Series: Live 1964 (Don't Think Twice)
35. Christmas in theHeart (Here Comes Santa Claus)
36.Nashville Skyline (I Threw it All Away)
37. Bootleg Series: No Direction Home (Chimes of Freedom)
38. Before the Flood (Most Likely)
39. Under the Red Sky (God Knows)
40. Self Portrait (Days of '49)
41. Empire Burlesque (Dark Eyes)
42. Budokan (I Want You) if the Bootleg Series ever does 1978...
43. Knocked Out Loaded (Listened to Brownsville a bunch of times, but the rest of the the record only once)
44. Bootleg Series: Witmark (listened through once)
45. Down in the Groove (Gave it one listen)
46. Dylan and the Dead (didn't make it all the way through this one)

Not sure what I gained by doing that, but I am nicely light-headed and also used the time to work my way through Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde.

There's no way I can of albums and a best song like you did above. To me, they're all sort of together and in need of each other.

They do depend on each other, I agree. Which is why even the "worst" of Dylan's music I still find interesting. Though I gotta say, in looking at my list, I get a kick out of just about everything on there-up until about 40 or so. I find it fun to rank every once in a while to see what I come up with, and then forget about it.
