Instead of the familiar challenge of a top 10, why not waste some time and rank them all in order? There! That's half an hour wasted!

Hmmm, and it would only take a minute or so to put at 1. Christmas In the Heart

...and just say everything else is at 2.

If this is true, it makes the first time I´ve enjoyed a fart that is not my own

Is there a thread for ranking all the albums also including outtakes and maybe in some cases (superior) alternate versions? Now THAT would be interesting...

Maybe there have been such thread before, but I'll do one now anyway... Pretty sure it'd be interesting.

I'm amazed how many people have Love & Theft in their top ten.

It's cohesiveness one can appreciate. It's a quality that's more often not present in Dylan's albums.

I feel bad talking down about Love & Theft or any of his stuff for that matter. I'm sure Bob's probably proud of that album being the first one he produced on his own. I mean to each their own but it's not my cup of tea outside of a few songs.

Ranking seems so irrelevant to the experience of enjoying an album that after thirty years of enjoying Dylan's records, I never even thought of ranking them all. But, after the suggestion I couldn't get the idea of doing it out of my brain. Thanks a lot! :)

I ignored a different poster's idea of including outtakes b/c so much of an album has to do with sequencing. Also, what if one prefers alternate versions to those that appear on the album? That provision seems to take one away from the reality of the album as is. If I was going to consider outtakes, I would tend to favor evaluating periods of productivity (e.g. 1962-1966 vs. 1973-1975 vs. 1978-1983 vs. 1989 vs. 1996-1997 and so forth)

I didn't include Dylan (1973) or The Basement Tapes because I consider them both proto-Bootleg Series installments that were never meant to be studio albums and, therefore, play on a different field.

I also ignored live albums because they simply feel quite different than studio albums. If I was including live albums, Live at the Gaslight and Live 1966 would be up there with those at #1, Hard Rain would be in the top ten, and Dylan and the Dead would be at the absolute bottom of the list.

1] Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks
2] "Love & Theft"
3] Bringing It All Back Home
4] Blonde on Blonde
5] Time Out of Mind
6] John Wesley Harding
7] Modern Times
8] Slow Train Coming and Oh Mercy
9] The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and Desire
10] The Times They Are a-Changin'
11] Saved
12] Planet Waves and Street-Legal
13] Nashville Skyline
14] New Morning and Shadows in the Night
15] Good as I Been to You and World Gone Wrong
16] Shot of Love
17] Triplicate
18] Self Portrait
19] Infidels
20] Tempest
21] Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
22] Another Side of Bob Dylan
23] Fallen Angels
24] Bob Dylan
25] Together Through Life
26] Down in the Grove
27] Under the Red Sky
28] Empire Burlesque
29] Knocked Out Loaded
30] Christmas in the Heart

I have numbered these but the order within each group is a little fluid depending on my mood. However, the groupings are fairly solid for me.

Nearly perfect as is and always excited to listen to them nearly every chance I get:
1] "Love & Theft"
2] Time Out of Mind
3] Christmas In the Heart
4] Tempest
5] Before the Flood
6] Hard Rain
7] At Budakon
8] Real Live
9] Dylan & the Dead
10] Unplugged

Albums worth listening to whenever the opportunity is there (monthly?)
11] Slow Train Coming
12] Oh Mercy
13] Saved
14] Shot of Love
15] Desire
16] Infidels

Albums I enjoy quite a bit when I get around to listening to them:
17] Modern Times
18] Street-Legal
19] Under the Red Sky
20] Knocked Out Loaded
21] Together Through Life
22] Empire Burlesque
23] Down in the Grove
24] Fallen Angels
25] Blood on the Tracks
26] John Wesley Harding
27] Shadows in the Night

Albums I’ll listen to if someone else puts them on but rarely listen to them otherwise
28] New Morning
29] World Gone Wrong
30] Good As I Been to You
31] Planet Waves

Album(s) I don’t yet own but would likely listen to if I had it
32] Triplicate

Albums that I probably will never bother listening to again in this lifetime (or the next) unless Bob re-records them with his present band. In no particular order. (The significant improvements during the NET have rendered these albums to the dustbin of history for me.)
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
The Times They Are a-Changin'
Nashville Skyline
Blonde on Blonde
Highway 61 Revisited
Bringing It All Back Home
Self Portrait
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Another Side of Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan

I didn’t rate the Official Bootleg Series… But if I did, numbers 1-3, 8, and 13 would be in the top shelf group. The Live 75 would be with the Live albums above and the rest of them would dwell in the never to be listened to group at the bottom.

OK, my modified versions of;

Freewheelin’
Blonde on blonde
Blood on the tracks
RTR ’75
Oh Mercy

(I hope to be able to squeeze in live fall ’80 and Bromberg sessions if they are eventually released)

Town Hall/ Carnegie ’63
Highway 61
John Wesley Harding
New morning
Infidels
Love & theft
Fallen angels

Times
BIABH
Basement tapes
Shadows in the night

(will see what comes out of the rumoured Nashville skyline sessions, Clydie King in ’82 and new Time out of mind outtakes)

Then there’s still a lotta gold, a song or two apiece

Addendum; not under consideration other than at the bottom:
Live ’64
Planet waves
Before the flood
Desire
Hard rain
Street legal
Slow train coming
Saved
Shot of love
Real live
Empire burlesque
KOL
DITG
Dylan & the dread
UTRS
GAIBTY
Modern times
Together through life
Christmas & the tart
Tempest

Phew, what did I forget?

I think the OP's list was reasonable. I don't agree with anyone on everything. But there are some missing albums such as Modern Times and Together Through Life.

The only WTF moment I had was "Where Teardrops Fall" is likely the worst song on Oh Mercy IMO.

Woof. This is really hard. Also, I dig Street Legal. I don't love it (I love songs on it) and even though the production is muddled, and there are some mediocre songs, when it hums it really hums (Changing of the Guards is top 10 for me, Senor, New Pony, Where Are You Tonight are all great as well).

Strictly Studio

2. Highway 61 Revisited... Best Song- LARS
3. Bringing It All Back Home... Best Song- It's Alright Ma

8. The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan... Best Song- Don't Think Twice
9. The Times They Are A Changin'... Best Song- Hollis Brown
10. Time Out of Mind... Best Song- Not Dark Yet
11. John Wesley Harding... Best Song- The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest
12. Love and Theft... Best Song- Lonesome Day Blues (I love Mississippi, but prefer Tell Tale Signs version)
13. Modern Times... Best Song- Ain't Talkin'
14. Nashville Skyline... Best Song- Girl From The North Country
15. Street Legal... Best Song- Changing of the Guards
