In the Popdose interview with Ian McLagan, linked to from the front page, Small Face McLagan refers to Jokerman as being about the then President, which makes some kind of sense. I know in License to Kill he calls Reagan "an actor in a plot", and there was a verse in Union Sundown which went, "See the man in the mask in the White House/who’s got no name or important ties/Just as long as he understands/the shape of things to come/He can stay there till he dies", and then went from the released song.

Having just witnessed the reaction of ER members to AJ Weberman in his thread “IT'S ALL GOOD reference to D's 30th Birthday Party” for posting an unusual take on a Dylan song, one expects you are due for severe chastising. I’ll just sit back and watch the insults pore in.

How you could compare that to AJ is beyond me, carnap.

AJ's would talk about how the iron head refers to a golf club and the whole song is about losing an imaginary golf game to AJ Webberman and Dylan's guilt at taking part in a rich man's pastime anyway. Talk about a fiery furnace!

I can see someone accepting the idea that Jokerman was about Reagan...

if they had been waterboarded 183 times.

Oh, sorry. There are some things we don't joke about.

I was teasing Telltale, in a friendly way, and along with him, the membership of Expecting Rain. It's not hard to tell. You-all deserve some teasing once in a while, don't you think?

I think you need to take a listen to Jokerman a couple 12 more times before you write this.... We could waterboard you later however, if you insist.

In my mind, Handy Dandy is the only obvious song about Reagan.

It's about all the handy dandy's out there, not just Reagan.

Meh. Waterboarding amounts to an aggressive wet T-shirt contest.

You want "tuff," go back to the Nick Berg et. al. beheading videos.

Whatever the song is about, I still don't like it.

Anything tuff enough to be considered torture in the middle ages is probably plenty tough.

I never got to see that!! at least it was over... Fast! However, being almost drowned over 50 times or more can be quite stress inducing. So you have to ask yourself a question. If you have to have this done to you......Would you rather be Killed immediately or Tortured for hours??

Doesn't the video feature a cut from a picture of The Joker to Reagan?

ah, that's interesting - although I don't think Dylan was involved in assembling the video's chain of images. Still, I'm pretty sure that Reagan was at least a passing consideration - and maybe a little more - when Dylan wrote this song about manipulators of crowds, even if a lot of the song has nothing to do with the then President.
