Okay, here's a totally arcane question. Can anybody tell me what kind of sunglasses Dylan wore during the 65'-66' period? You know, the ones in all the b&w photos? And don't be telling me Wayfairers 'cause they ain't. I know that much.

I went to an eyewear designer and he was pretty sure they weren't Raybans. He thought, more likely, they were Bausch & Lomb. In any case, he said they would be a hard design to find but offered to craft me a pair!

Well, Bausch & Lomb was the lens maker for Ray-Ban sunglasses, so they're the same thing. I read somewhere that Dylan wore Ray-Bans, but I've not been able to confirm it or find details. I even emailed Bob Neuwirth's website on the off-chance he'd respond with what kind of sunglasses the whole crew was wearing in Don't Look Back (didn't expect answer to such an assinine question, didn't get one).

You're right, though, they aren't Wayfarers, and they aren't Caribbeans, as one vintage sunglasses salesman suggested to me. They must be extremely rare at this point, because I've been unable to find them anywhere.

One more thing. Beyond the fact that Dylan wore them (thus creating more pointless minutiae for fans to obsess over), those sunglasses just look cool. That's why I want to find them. But given that this is a man/artist who was known for wearing sunglasses, a la Roy Orbison, you'd think someone would have asked the guy what they were.

Yeah, I don't expect to find a pair of those anywhere, that's why I'm having a replica custom made!

well GypsyDaisy, they're a nice looking pair of sunglasses that many people would like whether or not Bob wore them. There's no need for you to be so rude.

There was a website out there with a guy making replicas of Dylan's sunglasses from this period. I used to have the link, but I can't find it anymore.

Does anyone have this?

UPDATE: just found it

I got sunglasses almost identical to those for a forthcoming sixties-themed party on amazon.co.uk for 48 pence plus postage. Look the thing too!

Hey, did you finally receive the sunglasses? I've seen some negative reviews from this website. Thank you!

I think Dylan first wore the "1966" type shades in 1964, then in 1965/1966 and again in 1978. I think there were at least two different but similar models over the years. Most people will tell you they are Ray Ban Wayfarers, but they are most definitely not. On Wayfarers the protruding metal joint-hinges on the outer edges of the front are horizontal (and also were horizontal on mid-1960s Wayfarers). The Dylan sunglasses have vertical and in some shots no visible hinges at all. Also the Dylan sunglasses have a different overall shape, being slightly narrower. It is possible that the shades are different Ray Ban models (Ray Ban being the brand manufactured by Bausch & Lomb), but they could also be other early–mid 1960s brands/models like Zeiss. The shape is typical of the period. Dylan may even have picked them up while in Europe in 1964, because their first documented appearance with him seems to be at Newport '64 shortly after the European trip.
