Someone else has probably asked this already, but is the most recent Gotta Serve Somebody arrangement based on Tom Waits's Big Black Mariah?

It's possible, but Big Black Mariah is probably lifted from something as well. When is Tom Waits going to tour?

Great question!

Another unsolved mystery regarding TW. When he was living in NYC after moving from L.A. "for a change of scenery" in the early '80s, in several interviews he referred to people thinking he was considering "going to Acapulco." Apparently at a low point in his life (before he met Kathleen and cleaned up), I think he might have been alluding to suicide. Who knows.

Big Black Mariah is sometimes known as a paddy wagon or a hearse.

Hell of a song! I love the howling at the beginning. It's easy to envision TW hanging in the subways gathering inspiration for Rain Dogs. Recon time: gimme a screamer!

Here in the UK it's used to describe a Police vehicle, as is Paddy Wagon - not a hearse.

It also reminds me of Tom Waits' Satisfied...which is very similar itself to Big Black Mariah anyway.

(another connection - the Satisfied video is directed by Jesse Dylan)
