You might be an ambassador to England or France
You might like to gamble, you might like to dance

You may be hiding in the bushes, holding a smoking gun.

You might be in a honky tonk in a dust bowl
You might be going through the rubble with a fine tooth comb
They may call you Peter, they may call you Paul
They may not call you anything, anything at all.

You might be walking on a high rope, staring out the crowd
You may be leaping off it, talking out loud
They may call you mystic, maybe Mr. Soul
You might be on the wagon, you may be on a roll.

You might be on the highway, heading for the coast,
You might think you’ve seen her, you might think you’ve seen a ghost
They may call you Peter, they may call you Paul
They may not call you anything at all.

You might be somebody’s neighbour, maybe somebody’s son
You maybe somebody’s jealous husband, never stuck on the run
They may call you Father Time, may call you Mother Earth
Might not even know what you could be worth.

Thanks man, this is great! Some adjustments...

You might be in a honky tonk, in a nursing home

Might be walkin on a high rope, staring out at the crowd

May be somebody’s jealous husband, maybe someone on the run

Might not even know what they can be worth

Will be interesting to compare lyrics between venues...

Suspecting they're not all the same, right?

Do we have Seoul and/or Perth yet?

Still chatter going on about this over in the Singapore thread...

Yeah, it's a tough one. Both fit well. .... Ahh! Just so muddled up right there ... Gonna stick with my original thought, but BARELY.

very interesting, especially the first line, listened again a few times to that last verse, and now I hear "the date of your birth", which makes even more sense to me

The mother earth bit is likely a reference to Memphis Slim's "Mother Earth," which GSS references musically and structurally: https://youtu.be/FRyPHWw-Azo. Nice shout-out, and the lyrical update looks pretty cool overall.

Just saw SnowCap's transcribed version of 8/11 Adelaide... so here it is, then Melbourne:

Snowcap wrote:
While we're waiting for a clearer recording, here's "Gotta Serve Somebody Approximately":

Adelaide, August 11

1
You might be an ambassador to England or France
You might like to gamble, you might like to dance
May live in a honky tonk, may live in a nursing home
Searching through the rubble with a fine-toothed comb

You gotta serve somebody
Serve somebody
Might be the devil, might be the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

2
May be walking on the high wire, turning in the ground
Knocking on a better future, birthday clown
Might be in Las Vegas, having lots of fun
May be hiding in the bushes, holding a smoking gun

You gotta serve somebody
Serve somebody
It might be the devil, might be the Lord
But you gotta serve somebody

3
May call your father Time, may call your mother Earth
May not even know the total date of your birth
You might live all alone at Heartbreak Hotel
One dog serenading the moonlight and a desk clerk rang a bell

You gotta serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
It might be the devil, may be the Lord
Gotta serve somebody

4
Well, maybe you're a mystic, they might call you Mr Soul
Maybe you're on the wagon, you might be on a roll
May be someone's jealous husband, someone's sibling's son
Even may be someone on the run

Serve somebody
Yeah, serve somebody
It might be the devil, may be the Lord
But you still gotta serve somebody

5
You may be on a stroll, heading for the coast
May eat a cinnamon muffin, don't you think you've seen a ghost?
You might be a businessman, or even a farmer
May be policeman wearing body armour

You gotta serve somebody
Serve somebody
Might be the devil, may be the Lord
You still gotta serve somebody

OK, Melbourne #1 is possibly the strongest (sounding) Serve, so far this tour!
Exciting.
He cut it to 4 verses, axing Father Time & Mother Earth,
and added a couple Stu guitar breaks.

It’s really developing into a potential Barn Burner!
Verse 4 is hilarious! You lucky Melbourne people.

Great find! I love these little dots connecting Bob to his inspirations. :)

No, but I have heard of them.

... Wouldn't it be amazing if Gotta Serve Somebody is just Bob's way of slowly introducing a Peter Gunn theme version of Spirit On The Water?

It might be your sugar, it might be be my bowl,
But you gotta lay down somebody.

Mr Soul could be a reference to the Neil Young song of the same name, or a reference to Neil himself. You could also say the same about the Mother Earth reference

Listening to Adelaide it feels like "Maybe you're a farmer, maybe you're.... wearin' body armor" seems made up on the spot. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I love it, SnowCap, yes. Amnesia! Ha!
I still hear “hesitatin’” instead of “agitated”, but I might be uncertain...
