Concert news: Bob Dylan has booked a return to Charlotte
Bob’s back to Charlotte for the second time in two years
Charlotte Observer

Bob Dylan and His Band announced they’ll be coming back to Charlotte for the second time in two years.

The “Trouble No More – The Bootleg Series Vol. 13 / 1979-1981” concert will be held at 2,400-seat Ovens Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, almost two years to the day after Dylan performed his “Never-Ending Tour” at uptown’s 1,800-seat Belk Theater (that show was on Nov. 6, 2016).

Dylan, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, turned 77 this past May.

Here’s an excerpt from the Observer’s review of his 2016 concert here, for those wondering what the experience of seeing the notoriously enigmatic musician live might be like:

“His voice sounds better than you might expect: The bottom is shot, but the top notes have reasonable resonance. He talks through songs more than he used to, declaiming lyrics like a Celtic bard. He plays piano through half the numbers – sometimes standing up, sometimes sitting for a bluesy beat — and solos on harmonica in the middle of ’Tangled Up in Blue.’

“His social skills, never honed, have been reduced to nothingness. He doesn’t introduce his five-piece band; he speaks not a word to the audience; he doesn’t acknowledge applause, except during final bows. Band members, Dylan included, perform in backlit shadows; you can barely see their faces most of the time.”

I'll be here. Anyone know of a good place for me and my dad to get dinner? We're new to the area

^ I don't know the area myself, but do recall seeing this place randomly on Travel Channel years ago & still think about eating there every time I hear or read the words, North Carolina.

The Pit Authentic Barbeque

https://youtu.be/zPNVtsul1do - Tracked down the clip of the show I saw.

https://youtu.be/GjGWYnJ7xu8 - Mr. Ed Mitchell pit master supreme

... Looks like it's in Raleigh.

I say find a way ;)

Maybe Bob grabbed some whole hog styles before or after the Durham show??

... Hopefully he remembered to salute!

What artist who has a connection to Charlotte might Bob cover in the encore?

Maybe he'll cover Dean Martin. "Nothing would be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning..."

It's pretty obvious - the Ovens Auditorium is adjacent to BOJANGLES Coliseum

Maurice Williams of the Zodiacs was from Charlotte. What about a Jackson Browne-style encore of "Stay" (just a little bit longer)? I doubt Bob would do the falsetto parts, though. Maybe Donnie can hit the high notes?

I posted this in the Geographic Encores thread here in the tour section....

http://www.ovensauditorium.com/ovens-auditorium-history

For those interested & didn't see it give it a quick read. Lots of names to catch the eye & Dylan references as well... Not just Bojangles' Coliseum... Which is clearly the first thing that pops up (fresh & crispy?).

Good stuff for a history review of a not so well known venue.

Also, my first guess for this show was Doc Watson Tom Dooley in the arrangement style type of '52 Vincent Black Lightning in 2013 .... Not very likely considering the styles of Moon River & Man's World. ... Tis a guess at least

Can we get a little revisit of Lefty Frizzell's You're Too Late tonight, Bob?

Just sat down. Ovens auditorium is modern and reminds me of watching a movie at a muesum

Guess Bob rather enjoyed his foray into a Man's World and decided to go back for seconds. Either that or he felt like the first time wasn't solid enough and wanted to really nail it. I'm cool with that. I'm sure James Brown spent some time in Charlotte during his many travels.

Donnie wasn’t as loud as in Chattanooga and it made everything sound perfect. Bass was a little louder and sounded amazing

I saw many shows 1998-2000. A period where he was great and is widely acknowledged to have been great. I never saw him better then this year. He has reached a new summit. No one but the absolute greatest do that at his age. He makes an absolute mockery of every other '60s act which is still out there. He's oceans apart from any of them.

Definitely a reach, but this guy played with James Brown a lot & has done a lot more since. ... Still playing shows I believe.

Makes me think Moon River was because of the venue & Man's World is something he just might be doing. ... Find out more next show in VA tomorrow night.
