Tempest by Bob Dylan - Album Cover Location - Vienna, Austria

The site of the Tempest album cover photo location. The statue is located in Vienna, Austria. The sculpture of the woman is part of the fountain of Pallas Athene outside of the Parliament building in Vienna, Austria. It is on the side of the fountain facing the Parliament. In the sculpture, the woman depicts the Vitava River (aka Moldau River), one of the four main rivers in Austria. The fountain was sculpted by Carl Kundmann between the years 1893 and 1902. The four groups of sculptures around Pallas Athene depict the four principal rivers of Austria: the Vitava, The Elbe, the Inn, and the Danube.

I didn't have to do much searching to find this sculpture. As soon as the album was announced the source of the photo was written about on lots of Dylan sites. I found them just by typing "tempest cover dylan" into Google.

And once I found out the name, I could find many images of the fountain from different angles on Google Images by typing in "pallas athene vienna."

But because the depicted woman did not face the street, it was a little bit hard to find an image of her in the sculpture via Google Maps and Google Earth, but I eventually did, and I will show you how to find it yourself below. (see website link)

One last thing: none of the Dylan sites seem to know exactly why Dylan chose this particular photograph of this particular woman of this particular statue.

As for the color of the album, there is a song called Scarlet Town on the album, and that may have something to do with the scarlet (a shade of red) color on the front. In addition, a "scarlet woman" is a metaphor for a "fallen" woman, as in the book The Scarlet Letter, and that may also be behind the album image and color. For example, in the song Soon After Midnight on Tempest, Dylan sings, "Charlotte's a harlot/dresses in scarlet." And Dylan also rhymes "scarlet" with "harlot" on the song Jokerman. But other than that, my friends, the answer is, as usual with Dylan, a-blowin' in the wind. Time to go -- I can hear that Duquesne Whistle blowin'...

If anybody is planning to see the statue from the cover of Tempest while in Vienna, don't bother. I went to see it yesterday. You can't get anywhere near it. There's some sort of a construction site around it. You can only see the front of the fountain through a fence.

I went to the Vienna show in 2014 and returned for a short break in 2016. I wished I had known this statue was there as I would have loved to have tracked it down. Is it near the city centre?

It is. It's in front of the Parliament Building.

That means "more pub time!"

Since the renovation of the Parliament is expected to last for (at least) 3 more years, that will give you plenty of time at all pubs around town

My train from Brno to Wien just rolled into Austria, the weather is warm and dry, but overcast, and I am looking forward to another Dylan show tonight, my 83rd since 1981, in the second largest German speaking city on the planet, a place I have never been to, but where Dylan performed several times since 1981.

Speaking of 1981, Wien is the only stop on this tour where Dylan also performed in 1981, even at the same venue. And he will finish his concert tonight with two songs he has also sung in 1981, at all 54 shows of that year. So I am expecting a repeat of the set I saw last night in Brno, and there really is no point in wishing for surprises.

That said, a live debut of "Tell Ol' Bill" or "Tempest" or "Tin Angel" would be nice, and maybe later in the show a European debut of "Saving Grace" or "This Dream Of You" or "It's All Good". A long overdue return of "Every Grain Of Sand" or "Not Dark Yet" would be fine with me as well, as would of course a center stage performance of "That Lucky Old Sun".

The tram on my way to the hotel passed that fence and the statue a little while ago. Guess my sightseeing will have to be done elsewhere here in Wien, but not today, as I have all week for this, staying until Sunday (including a day trip down the river to Bratislava). Lots to see around here, but first things first, the concert tonight; less than four hours to go until showtime.

Keep an eye on the weather, if you’re planning on getting to the venue that close to show time. Everything slows down in Vienna as soon as it starts raining, so it might take security longer to let you in as well.

See you inside! 8)

Oh my, venue staff is already in a panic about the whole no-pictures business. The good old “do you need help finding your seat?” has been replaced with “do you know that you can’t take pictures?”. And I was just opening some candy... This poor guy will probably have a heart attack if someone pulls out binoculars or something like that.

BTW, tonight pictures are allowed before the show. Everyone who acknowledges that they know they can’t take pictures during the show is allowed to do it beforehand. And - who knew - the world hasn’t ended yet

Not sure what's going on.
Apparently there are crazy reports about the Tempest-cover-woman sculpture at the fountain of Pallas Athene wearing a black stocking cap!
