I have a couple of Visions of Johanna performances that I like better

I admit to being biased towards this performance!

Here's to a FRESH start that leaves ALL previous arrangements behind! Woo hoo.

No no no; there is just no topping the current arrangement of "Simple Twist" and his voice is superb on the current "Forever Young."

I fear that you are setting yourself up for disappointment in your attempt to cling to the past. Free yourself from such attachments and embrace the unknown.

if he were to remain approximately fixed to the standard number of songs and general structure he does now, I could see a great variety in this approach:

1. a rotation of traditional openers he has used over the years (with Jokerman and change my way of thinking making regular appearances).
2. similar to what he does now: a rotation of well known classics: (lay lady lay, don't think twice, etc.)
3. obscure sock knocker - any time or place. could have the frequency of this wheel's on fire, but no more than that. this is where that dirt road blues and someday baby could be launched.
4. lengthy song. on normal nights, something frequently played like desolation row, but on a special night, this is where that Sad Eyed lady or highlands would come in, allowing for such historical performances as Dirt Road > Highlands to happen.
5. Summer Days or Thunder on the Mountain. Every time.

6. (6-9) experimental focus. anything to define the mood for the night. options include:
7. mini acoustic set (old songs, obscure songs - opening with your no good or something, basement tape songs, WGW songs, whatever he wants....)
8. OR a focus on one or two albums (say Oh mercy and New Morning type albums)
9. OR a period focus: early eighties (religious); obscure unplayed eighties; or obscure unplayed classics (boots of spanish leather) . or folk covers.

10. (10 -13) Modern Sequence, with options: anything from TOOM through present. or, he can do one less song, opening it up for a longer number (no problem subbing in a visions into this sequence). any style of song. something like:
11. Love Sick> my wife's home town > high water > levee's gonna break OR
12. Mississippi > someday baby (if he passes on it earlier) > cry a while > forgetful heart OR
13. Lonesome day blues > standing in the doorway > sugar baby > cold irons bound

encores
14. obscure encore, but with the power of Can't Wait or something. (i.e. not necessarily an obscure song, but obscure choice for encore - even Tangled could work)
15. rotation of LARS/Highway 61/or Just Like a Women (new arrangement)
16. new watchtower or ballad of a thin man
second encore
17. his choice if he plays that many of course!

He may loose some of the audience at first i'm sure, but at the end of a few weeks, he may acquire a vast and consistent following from the core fans who may indeed travel to every show if it played like this. ...on second thought that's probably a scenario he would like to avoid if at all possible!

I've seen enough Nettie Moores. Although, I'd welcome a new arrangement of it, as I would most any Dylan tune or cover. And as the Dogg says, new tunes would be fun to. I will happily take whatever Bobby decides to dish out.

Remember:
50 years of recording
25 years of the NET
2 years of boring setlists

He has to do something sepecial or........................................................................................not!

I'm thinking of:
It ain't me Babe, Blowin in the wind or Heaven's door(solo on acoustic guitar with harmonica neckholder)

or at least

Wigwam (solo on keyboard one hand and Hohner melodica on the othe hand)

Which 2 years are you referring to?
Surprised so short a time based on some of your past comments.
Please extrapolate.

Early Summer 2011 was a great year for setlists.

Hope he keeps this up & throws in a few new songs as well as a few new 'older' songs, and of course, Nettie Moore.

I just love this song and he has not performed it in awhile or as much as he used to

I also really want to see heaven's door back on the setlist and Bob doing it greatly. It may open, it may be the last song of the night. It's a great song.

Yes as is what I was hoping for last year. BVs would be amazing with Heaven's Door as well :)
