I'm one of those people who can be "joke impaired", and who usually butchers the punch line when I tell one, so I was curious about this joke. Googling I found this blog and this connection to Bob.

I first heard this joke sitting around a table in an Italian restaurant in Studio City with several people all in the comedy business including Maurice La Marche (impressionist, voice of The Brain among many others), Billy West (voice of Stimpy and numerous others), John DiMaggio (most well known as the voice of Bender on Futurama) and Eddie Gorodetsky (well-known and prodigious comedy/sit com writer). Eddie told the joke and we all fell off our chairs laughing.

I like to think that I'm reasonably intelligent. And I still don't get it.

Fwiw, a received an email/comment from someone who was at the dinner when Eddie G. told the Big Orange head joke who says it probably was sometime in `99/2000. So it's been in Eddie's jokebook for awhile, just waiting to be sprung on unsuspecting TTRH fans at the right time.

Scott Warmuth passed on an interesting interview with Penn Jillette and Paul Provenza that has no BD or TTRH content but that does touch on Big Orange Head. As Penn notes in the interview, BOH falls into the same category as the jokes "The Welder" and "The Aristocrats," jokes that don't have traditional punchlines and that not everybody gets. Of the three, only BOH can be told in polite company. I think the interesting thing about the joke is that the punchline is actually in the middle.

If you're easily offended, or even semi-easily-offended and/or not interested in the comic creative process, you probably want to take a pass on "The Aristocrats" the movie if you haven't seen it. But if you are interested in how comics can take the same joke and make it their own, I highly recommend it. It's my favorite documentary of all time. On the other hand, my wife leaves the room whenever I put it in the player, and many people would say that's the more normal reaction. Eddie G. makes a brief appearance in it, btw.

Bob actually explains it pretty well. The whole joke is that you expect there to have been some sort of play on words that caused the Genie to misinterpret a more reasonable final wish. Instead, the guy actually ASKED FOR the big orange head. A version of the joke that uses a more expected ending would be a final wish (usually by a holy man) of "make me one with everything", whereupon the genie whips up a pizza with all toppings or something like that. The entire joke is a setup for that type of expected punch line. When the guy reveals that he actually asked for the big orange head, the unexpected ending is what makes the joke funny. Get it?

I think of all the comments - including my own - adamdean's is the most pithy and discerning.

Where is your evidence to support this bizarre and outrageous claim?

Yeah, that great joke.

I've been using every opportunity to test it on people since reading the blog entry linked above - and it really splits the populace into one half that get the joke and the other half who don't. Interesting fact.

That's a wonderful joke. One of my favs. The fact that a lot of people don't get it makes it all the funnier.
