Newsgroups: rec.music.dylan Subject: Dylan and Machiavelli - Rolling Stone interview 22 Nov 01 From: Chris Rollason rollason@9online.fr Date: 30 Nov 2001 12:55:57 -0800 Bob Dylan has before now praised the Italian Renaissance intellectual Niccol˜ Machiavelli, author of the statesman's manual 'The Prince', as one of his favourite writers. In the 'Rolling Stone' interview published in the 22 Nov 01 issue (pp. 56-69), Dylan now declares (p. 63): 'we're living in a Machiavellian world, whether we like it or not'. The association Machiavelli-prince-politics could throw new light on the song 'Political World' ('living in a political world' - 'living in a Machiavellian world'), as well as on the sinister Prince '[who'll] put the blade to the heat' in the closing stanza of 'Jokerman'.
