Why was Einstein disguised as Robin Hood in "Desolation Row"?
Robin Hood stole from the rich & gave to the poor--Einstein made nuclear power possible & in 1965 (when this song was written) some folks (not Dylan obviously, Dylan being a sort of neo-Luddite) thought nuclear power meant cheap electricity--a boon to the poor. Or, in general, Einstein wanted to help the world but the main result of his insights was the A-bomb. William Carlos Williams ("Einstein Among the Daffodils") and Allen Ginsberg (I forget the title)--among others--have written poems about Einstein in the same vein.
