A huge star, Bogart was a stylish smoker, and was
also, relatively speaking, a "little guy" in the world
of six-foot movie stars. In "To Have and Have Not",
where Bogart first met Lauren Bacall playing in her
first film role, there is a scene where she makes him
uncomfortable by bending down to untie the laces of
his shoes ("Tangled Up in Blue": I must admit I felt a
little uneasy when she bent down to tie the laces of
my shoes). Also appearing in that film is
singer-songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. (See my note on
