Subject: Rochester Review From: Bob Meyer (dyln61@buffnet.net) Date: Wed, 04 Nov 1998 12:32:32 -0500 Just some thoughts about a fall show, on a brisk night, under a full moon... GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY I've always loved this song as an opener. And Dylan jumped right into a real nice version that included one of my favorite rewrites of all time. "..You may be a women, you may be a man. you may be sleeping in a king size bed or eatin' from a garbage can. But you're gonna have to serve somebody..." MAN IN THE LONG BLACK COAT Excellent version with Dylan playing some pretty good lead guitar. Could this be a night of guitar hero Bob ?? GREAT vocals!! STUCK INSIDE OF MOBILE WITH THE This song was almost spoken to the audience like a street poet. Fast paced and electric. Bob's guitar leads where, sorry to say, quite mediocre, if not down right bad. Larry Campbell should be playing lead on this tune. No guitar legend Bob on this night. Bob vocal's are sounding better than ever!! I BELIEVE IN YOU Strange yet familiar chords are being played on the darken stage. What song could this be?? I'm having a hard time with the usual "name that tune" we sometimes have to play with Dylan. Suddenly the opening line " They asked me how I feel. And if my love is real.." Myself and the gentleman behind me say out loud, and at the same time, "Wow!!" I've never heard a better version of this tune. It was downright inspirational!! An incredibly powerful version of an incredibly powerful song. One of the highlights of my twenty something years of seeing Dylan live. COLD IRONS BOUND This is where this song belongs. A rockin' crowd pleasing rendition. This is one hell of a great concert song!! I hope it find a home in this slot. STONE WALLS & STEEL BARS What a great song to play after "Cold Irons Bound"!! Sort of like a sequel to it. This was done magnificently. IT'S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE Nothing that special here. The usual well arranged, well done version. TANGLED UP IN BLUE This was the usual great version of this classic but added was a fantastic harp solo. A solo that was reminiscent of the great solo's of 95 and 96. Dylan going down almost to one knee and just playing his heart out. It was nice to see him have the energy to do this again. It can only get better. MY BACK PAGES It just did get better. The harp solo here was better, louder, more intense. Once again going down to one knee and just wailing!! Great stuff is happening on this night!! ACROSS THE BORDERLINE This was a delightful surprise. What can you say. A great song that was preformed beautifully. BOB SPEAK Bob thanks us for coming out to seeing him on Election Day. He introduces Bucky Baxter as "...Buddy, er, I mean Bucky Baxter.." They both have a good laugh. Dylan appears to be having some fun tonight. HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED A blistering version as always. Larry Campbell's leads on this song just get better and better. I wish Bob would give him a little more of an opportunity to play. THE USUAL ENCORES These went off almost perfectly. A bit of a sound mix up gave us a strange intro to "Love Sick" but was quickly corrected. These four songs are a perfect ending to a delightful evening. A truly great time, witnessing a truly great performer, giving a truly great show!! ....Just some thoughts about a fall show, on a brisk night, under a full moon. Take care, -- Bob Meyer dyln61@buffnet.net
