Hello again,
because of the great interest - thank you Bob, thank you Mark - (*) in
this effort to update the recording dates of the "Freewheelin" takes
and outtakes, here is the second part:
(* maybe I shouldn't try to joke in a foreign language)

             _______________________________________
"The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" sessions: some assumptions on recording
dates for the released takes and the unreleased but circulating takes.
Based on Michael Krogsgaard's examinations in the Archives of Sony
Records in New York City in 1995.

Third session:
July 9, 1962
Columbia Recording Studio A, New York City

1. Baby, I'm In The Mood For You CO75717 Take 1 b = short false
                                                         start
2. Baby, I'm In The Mood For You Take 2 C
3. Baby, I'm In The Mood For You Take 3 C
Take 3 - according to M.Krogsgaard - was released on "Biograph"
But it seems very difficult to say which take track 24 on VIGO is.
Track 24 was - most likely - taken from the "John Hammond Acetates.
The indication there is: "Babe I'm In The Mood For You (take one)".
Take one - according to M.K. and to the copy of the sheet
- was a "short false start". If this is correct, track 24 on
VIGO can not be "take 1". Then, it must be take 2 or - see
below - take 4. It also could be that the "b" on the sheet
was meant for take 2 and put by mistake in column 2. If so
take 1 is track 24 on Vigo. I don't know. But what we can say is that
track 24 on VIGO was recorded on July 9.

4. Bob Dylan's Blues CO75718 Take 1 C
This take - according to M.K. - was released on "The Freewheelin' Bob
Dylan"

5. Blowin' In The Wind CO75719 Take 1 C
6. Blowin' In The Wind Take 2 C
7. Blowin' In The Wind Take 3 C
Take 3 - according to M.K. - was released on "The Freewheelin' Bob
Dylan"

8. Quit Your Lowdown Ways CO75720 Take 1 C
This take - according to M.K. - was released on "The Bootleg Series 1-
3"

9. Honey, Just Allow Me One More Chance CO75721 Take 1 C
   (Henry Thomas/Bob Dylan)
This take - according to M.K. - was released on "The Freewheelin' Bob
Dylan"

10. Down The Highway CO75722 Take 1 C
This take - according to M.K. - was released on "The Freewheelin' Bob
Dylan"

11. Worried Blues (Hally Wood) CO75723 Take 1 C
12. Worried Blues (Hally Wood) Take 2 C
Take 2 - according to M.K. - was released on "The Bootleg Series 1-3"

13. Baby, I'm In The Mood For You CO75717 Take 4 C
This take (or take 2 - see above) COULD BE track 24 on Vigotone if
take 1 really was a "short false start".

14. Bob Dylan's Blues CO75718 Take 2 C
15. Bob Dylan's Blues Take 3 C
None of these takes are known to be in circulation.

                ______________________________________

Now things are becoming less transparent:

4th session
October 26, 1962
Columbia Recording Studio A, New York City

1. Corrina, Corrina (trad, ?) CO76981 Take 1 B
2. Corrina, Corrina Take 2 C
3. Corrina, Corrina Take 3 C
4. Corrina, Corrina Take 4 C
5. Corrina, Corrina Take 5 b
6. Corrina, Corrina Take 6 C
Take 2,3,4, or 6 is track 20 on VIGO and was released on single
(because this song wasn't recorded on any other "Freewheelin'"
session with full band backing. Unfortunately M.Krogsgaard wrote
nothing about the Single-version so as yet it remains unclear which
take was released)

7. Mixed Up Confusion CO76982 Take 1 b
8. Mixed Up Confusion Take 2
The title says it all. There is no indication in M.Krogsgaard's
article if Take 2 was a complete take, a short false start or a long
false start. If you consider all three possibilities, Take 2 could be
the released single version (track 4 on VIGO) or track 16 on VIGO or
track 19 on VIGO. Glen Dundas in his book "Tangled Up In Tapes"
dated the four circulating takes of "Mixed-Up Confusion" on November,
14. For that session on November 14, Krogsgaard wrote that the tapes
and the recordings sheets were not available, so as long as there is
no new information, I stick to Glen Dundas. Although there are some
indications, that the four released/circulated MIxed-Up Confusion
takes are not all from the same session. But I don't want to
speculate on this. What did Clinton Heylin write in
his new book (which I ordered in November 1995 but haven't got until
today) about this issue?

9. That's All Right Mama (Arthur Crudup) CO76983 Take 1 C
10.That's All Right Mama Take 2 b
11.That's All Right Mama Take 3 C
12.That's All Right Mama Take 4 b
13.That's All Right Mama Take 5 C
Take 1 or 3 could be track 8 on VIGO
(because at the end, Bob Dylan said: "Let's do it again fast". Now
you can argue that there must be a suceeding take. The only other
recording date of "That's All Right Mama" was November, 1. But on
that day, they did only 1 take of the song. So - with a portion of
uncertainty - you can say track 8 on VIGO was recorded on October
26 but not as the last take ("Let's do it again fast"). The indication
on VIGO as "Take 1" seems to me not very reliable because the other
track of "That's Alright Mama" was indicated as "Take 2" (not only on
the VIGO CD) but take 2 - see above - had a false start.

14. Mixed-Up Confusion CO76982 Take 3 C
15. Mixed-Up Confusion Take 4 b
16. Mixed-Up Confusion Take 5 C
only speculations are possible for me here

17. Corrina, Corrina CO76981 Take 6 C
According to M.K. this take was released on "The Freewheelin' Bob
Dylan"

                  ------------------------------

5th Session
November 1, 1962
Columbia Recording Studio A, New York City

1. Mixed-Up Confusion CO76982 Take 6 C
2. Mixed Up Confusion Take 7 C
3. Mixed Up Confusion Take 8 b
4. Mixed Up Confusion Take 9 C
5. Mixed Up Confusion Take 10 C
6. Mixed Up Confusion Take 11 C
only speculations are possible for me here.

7. That's All Right Mama (Arthur Crudup) CO76983 Take 3 C
This take could be track 18 on VIGO.
Track 18 on VIGO could also be one of the complete takes from
October 26, but most likely not take 1.
Besides I wonder about the indication "Take 3", because there is no
take 1 and 2 in Michael Krogsgaard's listing. (This is NOT a critique
to Michael Krogsgaard, because he wrote in his article that sometimes
take numbers are not logical.)

8. Rocks And Gravel (arranged by Bob Dylan) CO76986 Take 1 C
9. Rocks And Gravel Take 2 ?
According to Michael Krogsgaard, take 1 was released on the
promotional edition of "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan". Therefore, take
1 is track 17 on VIGO (by the way: The version of this song on VIGO
isn't complete at the beginning. You can find a complete version on
the CD "The Genuine Bootleg Series")

              --------------------------

6th Session
Columbia Recording Studio A
November 14, 1962

Michael Krogsgaard wrote that for this session the tapes and
recording sheets are not available. So there is no listing of the
takes.

1. Mixed Up Confusion CO76982
According to M.Krogsgaard, the Single version of Mixed-Up Confusion
was recorded on this session.

2. Don't Think Twice, It's All Right CO77002
According to M.K., the version of this song on "Freewheelin'" was
recorded on this session.

3. Ballad Of Hollis Brown CO77003
Track 12 on VIGO was recorded on this session
(because this song wasn't recorded on any other "Freewheelin'"
Session)

4. Kingsport Town (Traditional) CO77004
According to M.K., the version of this song on "Bootleg Series 1-
3" was recorded on this session

5. Whatcha Gonna Do CO77005
Track 23 on VIGO was recorded on this session
(because the other version of this song (track 15 on VIGO) is from the
December 6 session. A complete tape from that session was circulated.
There is no third session on which "Whatcha Gonna Do" was recorded.
Therefore: November 14, 1962.)

                       -----------------

7th Session
Columbia Recording Studio A
New York City
December 6, 1962

2. Whatcha Gonna Do CO77021 Take 1 C
this take is track 15 on VIGO
(because it's the same version like on the circulated tape)

3. Oxford Town CO77022 Take 1 C
According to M.K. and to my ears, this take was released on "The
Freewheelin' Bob Dylan"

10.Hero Blues Take 3 b

Circulated but not on VIGO

12. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall CO77024 Take 1 C
this take was released on "The Freewheelin'"

               ------------------

This was the second part. The last part will contain the last
"Freewheelin" Session from April 23, 1963 and my conclusions for the
released and circulated takes from "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan"
(recording dates, backing and so on)
