I don't think it's "sooo bad", Mandel is a fantastic musician, but as the switch from Freeman to Sexton has shown, Dylan has pretty strict ideas of how he wants his band to sound these days, so the choice of lead guitarist isn't as important as it was in the 90s.

Performing-wise Mandel would have been more like Freeman, so I for one am happy to see Sexton still in the band, who's - like it or not - performing and not just playing.

The "sooo bad" was in reply to Milkcow and BABF saying how they want to go to some of the Aussie shows, which I also want "sooo bad". Sorry if that wasn't clear. I added the Mandel link as an afterthought cos not everybody on here reads the front page.

all the rumours about schedule problems seem to be fading away..... I think it is gonna be Charlie holding down the lead guitar role when they hit the road again...... Only question is ..... can he use three guitars on one song??????????????

Is Allen still his middle name at all? The (fake?) ID shown on the Bootleg Series booklet just says Robert Dylan.

i'll give anyone 3/1 odds that charlie is still in the band. if he knew he was leaving at the end of the fall tour there would have been some implicit acknowledgment of it (i.e. fall '02). if it somehow happened post-tour, that implies that bob or charlie had some sort of change of heart. i just don't see it between those guys. bob's like his dad. charlie didn't come back to vanish mysteriously... that said, i hope he actually plays lead guitar going forward. he was a shell of himself last fall. i don't give a x how tasteful those rhythmic lead licks are, they pale in comparison to say, atlantic city '99 rolling stone...it's on charlie though. bob will subjugate him if he can...

Mandel is a wonderful player, hope he sticks around.

Mandel has touring commitments with Canned Heat until September, so it won't be happening before a potential fall tour if at all.

Couldn't agree more. I couldn't give a s#$t if Charlie stands on his head while playing. Been seeing Bob live since 91, and while other players have come and gone, Charlie has always been amazing when Bob let's him cut loose. He has fun and is animated on stage...so what? Enjoy the music.

Yup, bring on Charlie, and let him play!

It has been a bit of a mystery to me that he has someone as gifted and enthusiastic as Charlie and he keeps him on the short rope. I would like to see him cut loose.
