Maybe I'm looking too deeply in to this. But Suze Rotolo's birthday is November 20. Could it be that she attended the show at The United Palace in NYC, where she lives, and Bob Played Tomorrow Is A Long Time for her? It's been more than speculated that the song was written for/about her. Then, wouldn't it be ironic that he played Things Have Changed next? Or do I have too much time on my hands? :)

Nice thought. For whatever reason he played it, it's sweet to hear.

Hey Callahan, that is a nice thought. I find myself hoping it's true.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if she was there. Who knows? Maybe they're in contact and friendly.

"Hey, I had a girlfriend 45 years ago and I think I remember she had her birtday on November the 20th. So maybe if I go on tour, I should perform somewhere near where she is living now - Note to self: employ someone to look that up - around that day. Maybe she'll come. Maybe I should play a song for her. Did I ever wrote one for her? Oh yes, "Ballad in plain D" ... mmm ... maybe another one. Don't know if that parasite sister of hers is still alive. For all I know she might come along and start a scene! Wait a second, let's log on to one of these Me-o-logist sites and check out which song they think I wrote for what-was-her-name-again. Let's see. "Tomorrow is a long time" it says here. Better check if that isn't one with stolen melody or lyrics. Nah, I'll hire some stud to that. I'll pick that one. Now just get the tour schedule set, convert once again to christianity so I can pray every night she'll come along and get someone to remember me of all this. God, I'm such a witty guy!"

Tell me: how does that sound?

 I'm not suggesting that the entire show was planned. I was just suggesting that possibly, since he was playing there the day after her birthday that maybe he performed a song that he supposedly wrote about her with her in mind. It's not like he plays the hell out that song.

How does that sound?

Like I said, Andy, just a thought, a silly romantic thought spawned from pure Sunday boredom!

Seems highly plausible. He hasn't played it since '05... and before that... he hadn't played it since '02, so it is a rare song. It's likely that the song itself is related to Suze and he did play it in NYC a day after her b-day. Hmmm...

If he's like most guys, he probably forgot her birthday 45 years ago, why would he suddenly remember it now!

Maybe they always wrote cards to each other on their birthdays. I think it was Dylan who said he likes to keep in touch with all his old lady friends.

Why does her birthday have to enter into it? Maybe she was there and he played the song for her, I don't think it's all that far-fetched.

He writes a song as venomous as Ballad in Plain D about her and she's someone whose b-day he'd forget? Come on!
Dylan probably remembers all his ex's bdays.
In that sense he's probably different than most guys. But *like* most guys, he probably couldn't care less about acknowledging it.

I've no idea about a Suze-song dedication though. It is a little coincidental, but there could've been someone else he knew in the crowd who requested it. *shrug*

I didnt want to say that until one of the T-members\Mods had said it before me. I am in agreement with you. Bob is one of those guys that has so many people that to remember them he had to make lists. So what does that say about this? A thought-- In my mind it would have to have been someone that he never got over and in one of his books that I have read he says many times that they had both forgiven one another and moved on so I doubt this song has anything to do with her.

He probably didn't realize the Suze thing until he was halfway through the song.

Heh.

Dylan would rather write a birthday card to Hugh than to his old lady friends? Somehow I'm not surprised.

He's had those rings for years, wearing one, two or three on any given night in the last couple of years.

Of course, I could be thinking all this because I just finished her book A Freewheelin' Time. And I do wonder if they've been in touch since she wrote that.
