Expecting Rain

I'm still taking Bob's word of "the box [of notes and quotes on scraps of paper] wrote it" over anybody else's conclusions.

I take his word on that, too, but it's also Dylan's legendary humility speaking

What I mean to say is that even though he got lots from the box, he still applied his intelligence and guile to putting them together to create such fantastic songs. If using quotes from the "con man's bible" to illustrate his technique of playing lead guitar isn't about the funniest thing he's ever done, I don't know what is. In general, I'm not sure how much understanding is to be gained by asking what Dylan "means" by using particular sources, but I don't see Warmuth as out to lunch the way Webberman was, and he certainly doesn't invade Dylan's privacy the way Webberman did. He's simply asking the questions that texts themselves raise.

I have to agree with Smoke on this one. I honestly have paid so little attention to Webberman, that I can't offer much of a comment, but what little bit I did read was absolutely bizarre with zero research or actual logic applied. Warmuth has done a huge amount of research and follows where the text leads, or it seems so to me. I don't mind that he sends his links to the front page. If I did that much work, I would want to share it, as well. There are others that consistently do the same thing with much less worthwhile information, in fact, some of them write articles using insight that has been lifted straight the pages of the ER forum!

Until anyone reveals the real truth - that he is funding the alien colonisation of Earth with his record sales, concert takings and advertising revenue - I doubt Dylan cares about folks discussing the red herrings in his lyrics. In fact, he is probably delighted.

others have had or written similar things to Warmuth. What I am troubled about are Warmuth's motives and if he is a fan.I mean this sort of thing has been put forward since the early sixties.
To me it does not take away at all from the quality of Dylan's works.

I've never seen Warmuth, even once, even slightly, denigrate Bob Dylan's work. He consistently argues that these quotations show a new depth to Dylan's lyrics and prose. A convenient example would be in the video posted just now by MMD, which puts the Othello line in a whole new context. Was Dylan aware of the link? No one can say for sure, but the last thing SW is doing is claiming Dylan's art is somehow worth less because of it.

I agree.

In fact, for me, though perhaps unnecessary to know all of these "borrowings", it sometimes adds to my appreciation of the music. Now knowing that Po Boy draws from an 1856 minstrel production of Othello, I have been inspired to go back and see what that was all about and now those allusions are mixed into the mix when I hear the song. And I reflect a little deeper on the album as a whole.

Tweet includes image showing Stephen Miller, in his 2010 bio of Kris Kristofferson, using a Chronicles passage that describes Dylan's reaction to Hank Williams (and his death), passing it off as a quote from Kristofferson's about his reaction to Williams.

Strange stuff.

Correction: This book by Kaputa is, like Stephen Miller's, a use of Chronicles (in 2012).

So, Chronicles as source.
