I have always thought that too.

I didn't know about these torture devices either. Nice find, trev.
But I guess Bob wasn't thinking about that ( if he knew about it).
" There is something you can send back to me
Spanish Boots of spanish leather"

But who knows?

Any way, it's a good song, one of my favorites from the Times album.

I thought he requested Spanish boots of Spanish of Spanish leather to emphasize how she had walked all over him by offering so many material things to him , when all he wanted was her to come back just as she was , and in the end she found someone else while he was waiting for just her.

I like the idea that he wants the boots because he's moving on. At least, he thinks he is.

Hey y'all!!
Please check out my cover of Boots off our first album...
We kinda stole the arrangement from those great ones he did with GE Smith in 88:)

That was my thought. He wanted to wear Suze's memory thin til his toes stepped out of the heels.

Cordovan (spanish leather) is supposedly very tough and durable. Would have taken Bob thousands of miles.

Is that intended as an insult to Suze, or what ?

Probably you couldn't have taken Bob one inch.

No. Bob had the break-up blues.

is that intended as an insult to bob??? Probably he is more than one inch and I'm sure Dylan's wife can accommodate.

a grower, for sure.

Turns out to be one of his best songs. The early Carnegie hall version is tough to beat but it's almost always great in concert. It's just such a great story. The back to back Hamburg versions in 2003 are very special even in that crowd, and the 1998 Glasgow version referenced above is a great one, too.

The 2003 versions are Bonkers Bob at his best. They are bizarre and completely inappropriate for the song but they're fantastic! One thing I enjoy about Bob is that he doesn't take his work too seriously, there have been some truly bizarre versions of songs over the years; some good and some awful. There's a crazy insane carnival one off Honest With Me from 2004 if I recall.
