It certainly makes sense. The "Mod years" seem to have morphed into a new "Grand period." And the appearance of the Grand Piano sure does seem to signify a new milestone. What do others think?

I think the piano just made it obvious. He's really been GrandBob for awhile.

He transitioned into ModBob out of GodBob so it's been a long run.

It's clear now that he's no Mod. He's a Grandaddy!
He's probably been transitioning to GrandBob for 10 years now, or more, realistically. It's just become more obvious this year. Really obvious. And ain't he doin' just GRAND?

A grand don't come for free

The grand piano is a tweaking of the keyboard Bob but in a good direction. The 2002 and early 2003 keyboard Bob had him playing somewhat rhythmically and very much like a percussion instrument. He played it well but never played it in quite the way that he himself carried the melody. He was always filling gaps or layering the work of his other musicians.

The organ was a devolution of that style. The circus organ was to the NET what electric guitar was to folk... (though I've never cared much for the folk side)... it took all this wondrous music and intentionally crashed it into a brick wall to see what would happen. (If he'd asked me first I could have told him and saved us both about 5- 6 years worth of our lives.) It wasn't an utter destruction and there was still more salvageable than say his music 40+ years ago but it wasn't to the "grand" standards we'd become accustomed to with the Never Ending Tour... it was say a 9.3 on a 10 point scale instead of the grandeur and spectacle we'd become used to where the low point of a tour might be 13.638.

So the grand piano is a tweaking of what we've had and even though he's dusting himself off and still figuring out where he's going with it, the low point so far on the 10 point scale has been 15.7... so I'd say he's kicking some butt here!

I always go back to 'New Morning', Stuttgart 91; what a great pianistic interpretation of a wardrobe falling downstairs! I swear if you introduced someone who'd been living in a hole in the ground for the whole of their life to a keyboard, their stuttering faltering jabs on it would sound better than this! It's so awful, it's funny, and of course, just precursors Bob throwing up behind the drum riser..ahh, happy days....

I love the piano, but as I just said in another thread. I hope he doesn't ditch the organ entirely, I love the "circus organ" the sound is amazing.

It works very well in the blues songs , but sometimes ruins the ballads. You know , workin' man's blues , Don't think twice , spirit etc

True, I wouldn't say "ruin" but the piano does make them songs better, although he hasn't played Workingman's Blues yet on this tour, which is a shame, he's need to bring that back! I haven't really heard him doing Don't Think Twice much on organ, he normally plays guitar on that one.

"Ruin" , well not really . But if you grab a 2006 , 2007 or even 2008 concert you'll see what i mean. The organ was better in 2010 and much better in 2011 , 2012 .
