Has anyone seen this update? How much different is it than the Take II version?

Yep. Books are cheap these days. After my old version fell apart recently, I managed to pick up the new No Direction Home for a fiver the other day. Ridiculous.

Am reading this at the moment, up to Desire now. Haven't read the original in years so can't be of much help. However, there is bound to be quite a bit of material at the end as Heylin is obsessive about giving all periods in Dylan's career proper attention. I intend to write a review on this on amazon as the kindle edition has been saddled with two one star reviews. Opinionated and often mean spirited Heylin might be, but there is no way this book deserves one star. It may be crippled by Heylin's ego but it's still one of the finest Dylan books, and Heylin is one of the most important Dylan scholars.

Anyone else been reading this 20th Anniversary Edition?

I read it and though I have to admit it to be a highly thorough read and very informative, there is something about Heylin's writing that made it a, at times, very unpleasant experience. His arrogance is in some parts just so blatantly obvious it makes you cringe. Happy new year, btw .

Heylin's instinctive dislike of ModBob may well cripple the book. I don't believe he's capable of objectivity when Dylan doesn't do what Heylin feels he "should".

I never mind his opinionated, somewhat insolent style, it's (at least) never dull.

I don't think I've ever read any Heylin (Scaduto and Thompson and No Direction Home many years ago; still dipping into Paul Williams; still to read Chronicle ...) but all the negative vibes suggest I ought to give it a whirl at least! Just to see for myself ...

^ I kinda hate him sometimes but you need to read him...it will surely entertain at the very least.

under $10 at Half Price Books but I haven't partaken yet. I recall Heylin purportedly disliked TooM so I'm not sure what I'd get out of reading the update. I remember what I took from the original: that Dylan recording sessions were bumblef-k (big exageration IMO) and that he loves the ladies (fits with the songs).

While I was skipping around and reading parts of the updated section last night, it seemed to lack as much of the marinated, insider info that made the rest of the earlier book more worthwhile. But some people are dead now, some don't wanna talk, or cant. So...

Heylin has been on Dylan's trail for many years, and I could't believe that Dylan doesn't know who he is.

Did they condense that stuff and take it out?

I just got confirmation from amazon that my copy is on the way. And I swore I wouldn't buy any more BD books...

I don't know. It just seemed to be more anecdotal than the previous parts. But I'm intending to give the entire book a brand new jolly rogering, from front to last, very soon. So don't put much stock in my review.

I could never commit that to paper. I'd be *out* by the end of January!

Thanks for the tip, guys--picked it up at Half Price Books today for under 10 bucks. Also found his "The Recording Sessions (1960-1994)" and another book I'd never heard of--"Chimes of Freedom, The Politics of Bob Dylan" for 3 dollars.

Boy, that last one was a great score for 3 bucks. Thank G*d they don't have that store in the Boston area.

That's one of the books on my "to be read this year" pile. I think there are different versions of it - at least it exists with a few different covers. In case anyone wanted to know that.

Indeed. And a quick search suggests even a couple of different titles (Wicked Messenger?). My cover looks like this...was a nice find for 3 bucks, hardcover, looks like it was never opened.

Looks the same as mine.
Must be the cheap edition.
