The Studs Terkel broadcast was also in April that year and so seems appropriate.

hm, thanks for reminding me about the Studs Terkel show, I don't think I have it.

Yes, I was around when "Freewheelin'" came out - but I don't remember it getting very much airplay back then - I do remember hearing Blowin' and Hard Rain and Don't Think Twice - I didn't start buying Dylan albums until "Bringing It All Back Home," although I did listen to a lot of The Times They Are A-Changin' at a friend's house. And yes, we were blown away by this young man only a few years older than us who managed to write and sing songs that were so much more than the typical love songs being played back then - and being impressed by the length of some of his songs! That said, I also wish now that I had been paying more attention back then

And I am thoroughly enjoying the downloads that Tragos put up for us - I had never heard a lot of what's on those and it's adding so much to my enjoyment of part 2 of our Summer Listening Challenge! Thanks again, Tragos!

The album is pretty well unassailable. And amazing for it's time.

That said, burnout on the big songs (along with the rather dull Down The Highway) makes me rarely want to listen to the first side. But side 2, anchored by Don't Think Twice and Dream remains a gas. I'm not as down on the 'humorous' songs as some people are, they're some of the most successful he managed, and I enjoy the references to oily football men and the still living John Kennedy and Bridgette Bardot, ect. Which are all kind of striking to hear now.

Town Hall and Carnegie Hall. Great bookends to Freewheelin'. Town Hall happened just a month before Freewheelin's release. And ends, of course, with Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie. A month later Freewheelin' further announces his independence and his intentions...

I'm a going back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin,
And I'll tell and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin'
But I'll know my songs well before I start singin'

And Carnegie Hall happens later in the year, just a couple months before the release of Times (though already in the can). Carnegie opens with The Times and closes with a triumphant When the Ship Comes In. Furthering the mission set forth in Hard Rain (and listen to the sublime Lay Down Your Weary Tune!)

I hope they're officially released someday, more people need to hear those concerts.

I hope they can release some newer stuff, 70's, NET stuff etc.
The sixties have been focused on too much lately.

We had a pool table in our recreation room in the early 60's. I wore out my copy of Freewheelin', playing pool for hours. Every note Bob sings and plays is etched deeply in my consciousness. I can close my eyes and hear it, no speakers or headphones required. Always a grand pleasure to revisit!!!

Magnificent album. I've listened to it on the way to work today. I LOVE the songs "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" (unfortunately it holds a dark memory for me, but I still love it anyway), Masters of War, Oxford Town (probably my favorite tune on the album and very enjoyable to hear), Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall,...let's just say the whole thing. There's not a dud on this album to me. An Essential piece of the Bob Dylan discography without a doubt, I know everyone on this site has heard it most likely. If you haven't, GET IT, GET IT ASAP. Legendary Album!!!

"Oxford town, Oxford town, everybody's got their heads bowed down."

I get drawn in by that song, too, what of a song there is. It sounds unfinished, which is maybe just as well. But the meter, or somethin' can hook ya'.

Somebody better investigate soon...I can never turn that song off, it's one of my favorites, too. An interesting mashup of Oxford Town with the Gorillaz is here:
