Trev is a little bored so I've decided to form a new supergroup in the style of the Travelling Wilburys.
Bobby's in. And I think I'll also choose Joni Mitchell - I know she's a woman but things have moved on since the late eighties.
Van Morrison and Lou Reed are also in - just for the laughs. Camaraderie is very important. So I'll have Nick Cave in as well.
And Tom Waits - the harmonies should be ... extraordinary. If those guys ever stop larking about, though, I think there could be some great music made. However, I'll be the first to admit that it's not a very well thought out lineout and I've essentially just named a lot of my favourite artists without much regard for the blend.
Who would you have in your supergroup? Tell your old pal Trev, and I'll pass it on to Dylan's management.

I changed my mind - replace Ringo with Keith Richards.

Yeah, Ringo's good. I think you'd need a Ringo or Ron Wood in there - someone who's been part of a massive group and negotiated a few egos within that group.

Bob Dylan - Jeff Beck - Charlie Sexton - Neil Young - Tony Garnier or Paul McCartney - Terry Bozzio - Larry Campbell - i think they'd come up with some pretty good stuff.

oh wait, some female vocals - Lucinda Williams!

My 'new improved' Traveling Wilburys would consist of Bob, Nick Lowe, John Mellencamp, Paul McCartney and Billy Joel... Fact!

I cannot agree with this... the balance and feel would be wrong... this is more a line-up if someone wanted to put together a new, improved Highwaymen super-group... but it would not work as a new Traveling Wilbury super-group... and I would have thought that that was obvious!

You also appear to be in favour of reducing the number of personnel in the band... a Traveling Wilburys band must always have five members... any more or any less and it just does not work!

I agree with Russ333. Plus Mark Knopfler, then. Beatles were four - great idea - I have never thought they finished because there were not five of them....

Four is fine if you want a new Beatles band... but it is far from fine if you want a new Traveling Wilburys band... that has to be five folk... NOT FOUR... FIVE!

This thread is now beginning to really upset and annoy me... it's not rocket science... why is it so hard for folk to get their heads around the basic facts?... and where the hell has Mark Knopflers name come from... he wasn't in the Beatles or the Wilburys... he was in Dire Straits... unbelieable!

You and Russ333 are both completely wrong!

I still don´t quite understand why they must be 5. Do we want them to reuse the clothes the used to have in the original band?

Bob, Patti Smith, Macca, Richard Thompson, Nick Lowe (good call earlier!). Back up musicians would be Benmont Tench (keys), Zack Starkey (drums), and Chuck Prophet (guitar)

I do like the idea of Chuck Prophet being in the band... that is a great suggestion... I would definately have him in the group if he is available... a very under-rated talent... anyone who hasn't heard Prophet, go and check him out... you will feel totally rewarded in doing so.

Bravo, arthurprecarious... bravo!

The New Wilburys would obvious have to have the surviving, original members. Well, except for Jeff Lynne. That guy can suck it.

So...

Bob Dylan (guitar, harmonica, "vocals")
Tom Petty (bass guitar - his original instrument, guitar, vocals)
Dr. John (piano, organ, vocals, etc.)
Marc Ribot (lead guitar)
And let's put Charlie Watts on the drums. I can never get enough of Mr. Watts cracking the whip. Jim Keltner's nice and all, but he's a bit too laid back for my tastes lately.

I say we also throw in a female singer for good measure. Say Irma Thomas. She's been around. Or Neko Case (if we want to throw in a younger generation).

As for producer... Anybody but Don Was.

I'm not a huge fan of his either, but he more than anyone else was responsible for the Wilburys' signature sound. I don't think it would be the Wilburys without him. Of course, I don't think it'd really be the Wilburys without George, either. I suppose they could get Dhani...but if we're going down that road I'd rather replace Bob with Jakob and start an entirely new group without any of the Wilburys. They did a really nice take on Lennon's GIMME SOME TRUTH together for an Amnesty International comp a while back.
