Expecting Rain

Remember Chris Shaw? Bob's sound engineer from Things Have Changed through to TTS. Did some great work imho and Bob said some nice things about him around the time of L&T. He also gave some wonderful insight in those Uncut interviews around the time of the release of TTS.

Anyway, I tweeted him out of curiosity and asked him did he have any involvement this time round. He kindly responded with the following:

"nope wasn't involved in the new Dylan sessions but sources tell me Scott Litt was behind the board this time. Supposedly amzng."

A quick google search reveals Mr Litt is a producer of some repute and worked heavily with REM in the past including on Out of Time and Automatic For The People.


Pretty interesting stuff....

Scott Litt (58), very possibly the chief engineer of the new record, has worked with Ian Hunter, Carly Simon, Liz Phair, Juliana Hatfield, the Indigo Girls, Paul Kelly, New Order, The Replacements, Patti Smith (Dream of Life), The Woodentops (Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway), That Petrol Emotion, Counting Crows, Days of the New, The Get Up Kids, Ziggy Marley and Alela Diane.
Litt produced 5 of REM's albums, including Automatic For The People. He ceased working with the band in the late 90s.

Great investigating! I'm sure we'll get the official news pretty soon.

Also worked with Nirvana, helping produce the MTV UNplugged album, and mixing a couple of singles.

What do you think he means by "behind the board"- engineer or full on producer? Isis did refer to the rumour if him working with an "external producer" but I wonder in what official capacity? I'm not familiar with the "boards" lingo. Is it as in soundboard which I associate with a certain species of live bootleg?

I hope Jack Frost is in on it too.

It is somewhat "as in" soundboard...in that it refers to the mixing board...but I wouldn't assume one way or another whether he's producing or engineering, I'm pretty sure I've heard the term used both ways. Nice work obtaining this news!!

just sayin' i don't put on "time out of mind" with the thought, "boy howdy, this is gonna be FUN!" i guess i can see how "new morning" is more "fun" than other dylan albums, but that particular aspect doesn't make it one of his better records. it's actually one of his worst albums, imo, although still, uh, "pleasant," in the same way i find "self portrait" and "nashville skyline" pleasant. i think "time out of mind" is infinitely better than "love & theft," but you know what they say about opinions.

Ha, so true. I chuckled how it seems one person or another has said "amazing", "magical", "best album in years", or "an instant classic" about each of Bob's last 13 or so releases. Not saying it will or wont be, but the same terms come out each time, as if someone working with Bob would say..."eh, its mediocre. I've heard him write better stuff".

litt can deal with the studio sound and help with the mix, from the recent shows i think bob is after a new guitar sound.

most bob records have been amazing, with a few falling into the almost amazing category.

im pretty sure this one coming up will fall into the former, amazing, category.

Im def not going right to the dark side. Simply stating pretty much every Bob album pre-release has had all the same terms and desrcirptors applied to them. Hoping for the best, obviously, or I wouldn't be on this message board.
