According to the news on Expecting Rain's front page, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter has terminal prostate cancer. He's spent most of his time since his release working towards the rights of those wrongly accused.

I think introducing Hurricane to the 2012 NET setlists would be appropriate.

I said a whole lot about Carter's boxing career in another thread. I don't feel like repeating all of that right now, but yeah Carter is cool and it would be nice for Hurricane to be in this year's setlist.

This is sad. Perhaps, Bob will play Hurricane next show?

this is from Australia which mentions Bob Dylan in its headline with Rubin's passing:

Quite surreal to see Dylan's name in the headline. With all due respect to Rubin's family and supporters, ABC Australia must think Dylan means a hell of a lot to what he was all about. Which he could have been, but this will open a can of worms. See ER tonight.

It's very coincidental that I have been listening to the song a lot recently, and have watched the video from the John Hammond tribute. I never much appreciated the song even though I thought it Bob's performance on the video was very powerful. I have been appreciating the song more lately, so it was a bit of a shock to get the breaking news that Rubin had passed. May he rest in peace.

Must not point out factual inaccuracies in song must not point out factual inaccuracies in song must not point out factual inaccuracies in song. Cool singing by Dylan, though

The factual cock-ups of that song have been talked on lot anyway, in case anyone wants to look.

I read somewhere that Bob changed his mind about Hurricane. He probably won't ever play this song again.

If this photo, posted in Visions of Bob by bobonmymind, is real, that puts a new light on Bob's connection to Carter.

Good riddance, scumbag......I keep reading and hearing that he was exonerated ?

His case was overturned on a technicality.

He was not found "not guilty".

My only regret is that he will only die once.

Your comment is inaccurate. I don't know, nor does any of us, whether he was guilty...but he was not released on a technicality. That said, he was not known as a very nice person, before or after his incarceration. (And was a vastly overrated boxer.)

Nice picture! Well you know, if Carter drops by at one of Bob's shows I don't think Bob would neglect him or not let him backstage. Regardless of what he might think about the case nowadays. So it might just be a friendly photo.

I don't think it's that easy to get backstage at Dylan shows. If Bob hadn't wanted to see him, I don't think he would have.

I think 'Hurricane' is less about the facts of the Carter story than about the light the case shone on the inbuilt racism in the American legal system. The song has much in common with 'The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll' in that regard: the message is that the story itself, though sad, pales in comparison to the tragedy of living in a land where justice is a game.

Those who judge Dylan's song on the merits of their opinion of Carter's guilt or innocence are, I would suggest, missing the message of the song. In the eyes of the jury, Carter was guilty long before he stepped in court, and indeed long before the shootings in the Lafayette Bar. He was guilty the day he was born with a black skin, and stood no chance of getting a fair trial; just as surely as the jury was always going to be lenient towards William Zantzinger due to his being white and his victim being black.
