I bet most people visiting ER own or are very familiar with the Anthology of American Music by Harry Smith

It may be possible to by a Dylan fan in particular and an American-Arcadian-African-Scots-Irish, English-and-probably-more music aficionado in general without being aware of this masterpiece. However, if you don’t own this music, please research it, save up $50 or so and buy it when you can…I promise it will never leave your collection.

In addition to the 84 songs that Harry collected, an integral part of the package is a wacky booklet that he wrote to accompany the music. It lists all kinds of information about the recording and the artist, but a really cool part is that Mr. Smith somehow distills a bunch of these songs into witty headlines that could fit on a bumper sticker.

Example: For the song Henry Lee (you can hear it on Dylan’s version called Love Henry off World Gone Wrong), Smith synopsizes: SCORNING OFFER OF COSTLY TRAPPINGS, BIRD REFUSES AID TO KNIGHT THROWN IN WELL BY LADY.

Or this one for the song Stackalee: THEFT OF STETSON HAT CAUSES DEADLY DISPUTE; VICTIM IDENTIFIES SELF AS FAMILY MAN.

So, say Harry came back to us and decided to make an Anthology of Dylan songs. How would he describe one or more of your favorites? We could do dozens just on a song like Maggie’s Farm...
