Ok so we all know that Hard Rain has one of the greatest performances of all time (Idiot Wind), but over all, I prefer the Hard to Handle Dvd. What are your thoughts?

Hard Rain wins of course but that's not to say Hard To Handle is bad, and I think the '86 shows with Petty are pretty underappreciated, especially the initial Australia/Far East leg. Both are very enjoyable documents to me!

"Idiot Wind" gets a lot of praise but "Shelter from the Storm" is amazing. That song alone is better than "Hard to Handle".

I think the 1960s tour with the Hawks and 1970s Rolling Thunder produced a lot of performance that verged on chaos, but reached perfection.

For sure, but then again, "Idiot Wind" is "Shelter from the Storm" on acid, or an eight ball of coke.

Coke.
Therefore, went with Hard Rain.

Is this a joke? Hard Rain is in a league of its own.

I always liked Hard to Handle. But of course Hard Rain is in a completly different league. So there really is no contest.
But both titles deserve a proper release (or rerelease) the sooner the better.

Hard Rain was a revelation. Watching it when it first aired in '76 or '77 was almost a religious experience. I recorded the audio on cassette and listened to it endlessly. It was so cool to have songs that didn't end up on Hard Rain.

Hard to handle was a disappointment at the time. The burnt pretzel voice and the girls singing. Looking at it now, it's not so bad. Petty's band was doing the best they could with what they had.

Agreed, but I was angry in the early 90's that it was available on video but the public couldn't see the Hard Rain I'd tracked down - not easy at the time, for you young punks!!

The Petty thing is OK in hindsight but Hard Rain is still the REAL DEAL.

The full Hard Rain concert re-release will be the DVD part of the Blood and Thunder Bootleg Series 14 set to be released early next November (but will be given a special delayed delivery 2-4 weeks later if ordered through the official website.) Those ordering through BD.com will get the Hard to Handle DVD as a special gift for using their services, as well as a refund on their postage fees.

I did exactly the same, still have the cassette. The quasi-bootleg "Shelter From a Hard Rain" is now available on CD, but annoyingly, omits "Knockin' on Heaven's Door".

Hi,

To say that Hard Rain (pure cinéma vérité) is A MUST is as obvious as “the sun rises everyday”, on the other hand Hard To Handle is an excellent video concert that every Dylan fan should see.

In spite of video quality (as far as we know) the Clearwater rejected video, concert for TV filmed and never broadcasted, is also “head and shoulders” above Hard To Handle.

Cheers and sorry for my bad english,

Ramón

Hard to Handle by a knockout in the first.

Based on the interest/willingness to listen to them. A couple of times a year (maybe) and Hard Rain will satisfy the interest. Hard to Handle I could probably watch every month and can't seem to get enough.

I enjoy your opinions even though I often disagree with them, plus you're one of the few people I see on this site that really loves the 80s output (and Christmas in the Heart, for that matter). Hard to Handle is fun. But for me Hard Rain is just brilliant.
